Answer the Word Trigger activity on pp.
83-84 using your own dictionary. 1. How do studies function for delight, ornament, and ability? 1. for delight: privacy and rest for ornament: discourse for ability: judgment and disposition of business 2. What happens when you spend too much time studying for delight, ornament, and ability? 2. Too much time studying for delight is sloth. Too much time studying for ornament is pretension. Too much time studying for ability is the folly of scholars. 3. Does the author want his readers to literally eat books when he wrote, Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested? What does he mean by this statement? 3. Some books are only meant to be read in parts (tasted). Other books are to be read for leisure and not out of curiosity (swallowed). Still others are to be read with care and attention (chewed and tasted). 4. What do reading, discussing, and writing do to a person? 4. Reading produces a full person. Discussing (conference) produces a ready person. Writing produces an exact person. 5. How does the author believe that studying can address, by physical exertion, some afflictions people suffer from? 5. A wandering mind (often locked in daydreams) can be addressed by studying math. A forgetful mind can be addressed by repetitive actions. A mind that cannot detect variations can be addressed by studying the scholastics of old. A mind that cannot explain and find pieces of evidence to support claims can be addressed by studying law. 6. The term cymini sectores is translated as splitters of hair or those who are obsessed with complication that they raise questions without end. Do you agree that the scholastics like St. Thomas Aquinas were indeed splitters of hair? Why r why not?
