5. The story is set in a predominantly dark
place (blind street, abandoned house with
dark rooms, hiding in the shadows). There is a
play of light and dark in the story. Notice
that when the narrator describes Mangans
sister, she is always bathe in mysterious light.
The setting perfectly describes the narrator
as a dark romantic: a brooding sort of
romantic hides in the shadow of shyness but is
susceptible to bouts of romantic gesture.
