WHAT IS A BUILDING?
A structure that has a roof and walls and
stands permanently in one place. The primary
function of buildings is to provide shelter to its
occupants.

Residential Buildings, Educational Buildings, Institutional

Buildings, Assembly Buildings, Business Buildings, Mercantile
Buildings, Industrial Buildings, Storage Buildings, Hazardous
Buildings.

Building function cannot be limited to provide

shelter only.

WHAT ARE SERVICES ???

Buildings must be designed
with features to provide
better lighting, comfortable
space temperature, humidity
and air quality convenient,
power and communication
capability, high quality
sanitation; and reliable
systems for the protection of
life and property.

WHAT ARE SERVICES ???

WHAT ARE SERVICES ???
For example imagine yourself in the most fabulous
building in the world now take away the lighting, air-
conditioning and ventilation, the lifts and escalators,
acoustics, plumbing, power supply and energy
management systems, the security and safety systems.

you are left with a cold, dark,

uninhabitable shell.

How will you feel????

BUILDING SERVICES
Building should be designed in such a way to provide
an environment where people can feel comfortable,
work, live and achieve.

Basically BUILDING SERVICES is what that makes a

building come to life i.e. what makes the building
work.
So, Everything inside a building which makes it safe
and comfortable, comes under the title of 'BUILDING
SERVICES'.
Building services contribute largely to
the sustainability & functioning of the
building.
Building services are the systems installed in
buildings to make them comfortable, functional,
efficient and safe.

Building services include:

Energy supply (gas, electricity and renewable sources such as
solar, wind, geothermal and biomass).
Water, drainage and plumbing
Escalators and lifts.
Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC).
Fire safety, detection and protection.
Security and alarm systems.
Artificial lighting system
Why Building services ???

Building services play a central role in contributing

to the design of a building, not only in terms of
overall strategies and standards to be achieved, but
also in the sizes and location of major plant
and equipment, the position of vertical service
risers, sustainability and so on.

This means that building services design must be

integrated into the overall building design from a very
early stage, particularly on complex building projects
such as hospitals.
Importance Of Building Services
Building services are indispensable for buildings.

As an example certain types of building such as

department store or industrial buildings are almost
100% dependent on electrical lighting, ventilating and
air-conditioning and

High rise buildings rely on vertical transportation

and high speed pressure for water supply.

The implementation of services demands a

considerable amount of floor and ceiling so proper
planning is necessary for their allocation.
What is the Role of an Architect ?
Responsible for the design and planning of the
mechanical, electrical and public health systems
required for the safe, comfortable and environmentally
friendly operation of modern buildings

Building should be designed such that it provides

better lighting, comfortable space, temperature and air
quality, convenient power and communication
capability, high quality sanitation and reliable systems
for the protection of life and property.
Classification Of Building Services
Mechanical Systems,

Electrical Systems,
plumbing and } MEP systems

Building Operation System.

They are all very important part of planning,

designing and construction of a building.
Mechanical System
- Any building service that uses machines.

Mechanical building services account for around 30%

of the capital and 50% of the operating cost for a
typical office, and substantially more in highly
serviced buildings such as hospitals.

Heating, ventilation/ air conditioning (HVAC)

Escalators/ elevators
Fire fighting system
Mechanical System
HVAC system - stands for heating, ventilating and
air-conditioning and includes a variety of active
mechanical/ electrical systems to provide thermal
control in buildings.

The objective of an HVAC system is to ensure that an

indoor environment is both safe and comfortable for
humans.

Vertical transportation escalators/ elevators

Nothing impacts a building's
overall functionality, safety and
value quite like its vertical
transportation system.
Fire fighting system
A fire fighting system is probably the most
important of the building services, as its aim is to
protect human life and property.

Mechanical/ Electrical / Plumbing Systems - fire

storage tank - specialized pumping system
hydrants or sprinklers; fire and smoke detection;
alarm system
Electrical System
Electricity is one of the most important
blessings that science has given to mankind. It has
also become a part of modern life and one cannot
think of a world without it.
Electrical power
Artificial lighting
Auxiliary

Electrical power
General power supply and distribution,
standby source etc
Energy supply - gas, electricity and renewable
sources.
Escalators and lifts.
Fire detection and protection.
Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC)
Artificial lighting system
Lighting or illumination is the deliberate use of
light to achieve a practical or aesthetic
effect. Proper lighting makes all work tasks easier.

Plumbing System
Water Supply
Sanitation
Waste Management
Rain Water Harvesting Systems.

A plumbing system serves two purposes: to

supply water for human use, and to get rid of
human wastes.
Plumbing System
Plumbing is the system of pipes, drains, fittings,
valves, and fixtures installed for the distribution of
potable water for drinking, heating and washing, and
waterborne waste removal.

The plumbing industry is a basic and substantial part

of every developed economy. The word derives from
the Latin plumbum for lead, as the first effective
pipes used in Roman era were lead pipes.
SERVICE CORE
A vertical element in a multistory structure, containing
the elevators, vertical runs of most of the mechanical
and electrical services, and the fire stairs.

A core allows people to move

between the floors of a
building, and distributes
services efficiently to the
floors.
The service core is a distinctive feature of
a tall building and its design plays an
important role in the success and
sustainability of the whole structure.

In general service core contains:

Elevator shafts Elevator lobbies
Main & escape stairways Riser-ducts
Toilets Other service rooms
