Ashley Vidal; Edu 280

Name: Ashley Fresco Vidal

Status: single, not married
History:
My name Ashley, was given by my oldest brother. There was no particular reason
of naming me this. He just had a book of names and thought it was a pretty name.
For my middle name, that is my mothers maiden name. In the Filipino culture,
children inherit their mothers maiden name as their middle name to show respect
to her family. Lastly, my last name came from my fathers family.
My ethnicity is Filipino. I am not full-blooded, because I also have Chinese blood.
Most likely, I also have a little bit of Spanish Blood from the Spaniards conquering
Philippines. Im not sure.
I was born in Las Vegas, Nevada, making me Filipino American.
At 1 year old, I moved back to the Philippines and then came back to Las Vegas at
the age of 5.
I was raised with the Filipino culture and grew up here in America, so I identify
myself as only Filipino American, rather than telling others that Im also part
Chinese.
My birth order is technically the youngest. Although Im the youngest, I consider
myself as an only child, after taking the Child Guidance class, and learning about
birth order.
The reason I consider myself as an only child is because between all of my siblings
and I, there is huge age gap with 6 years being the smallest gap. Although I am the
6th child, my oldest half siblings werent raised with me and we had over 12 years
age gap, and my two other siblings are also older than me. I carry more of the only
child traits combined with the youngest birth order.
My father is the step father of my two siblings grew up with. So, I suppose we are a
blended family.
My siblings and I grew up as conditionally separated family. This means that a
family member is separated from the rest of the family due to employment, military
service, hospitalization, etc. In my case, my father was in the military. Another
reason is when I turned 1, my parents left my brother and I in the Philippines for 5
years, being raised with our aunts. Coming back to Las Vegas, we were still a
conditionally separated family as my father was in the military. But just a few years
ago, my father got sick, and I suppose we ceased becoming a conditionally
separated family.
According to the socioeconomic status calculator, my results were: 20% upper, 51%
middle, and 29% lower.
Comparing myself to others in the U.S with my demographic profile, my results
were: 14% upper, 40%lower, and 46% middle.
These results show that I belong in the middle class.
I am a Christian. I was born and raised Catholic, but by choice, became one of
Jehovahs Witness.
My first language was Tagalog, and later on I learned English.
Since I spoke the Tagalog language and was raised in it together with getting
educated in English, I cant really say that Im proficiently fluent in both languages.
I know that if I didnt receive any of the special type education services, I didnt
need to make this part. But I felt I had to. Because even though English was my
second language and I struggled through my elementary school until 5th grade, the
school never provided me any services such as: ESL, Bilingual Education, and etc.
As an adult majoring in education, I feel upset that these services existed and were
never provided for me.
My father has Valley Fever, which I would put in the respiratory disorder section as
this disease is a fungus that affects the lungs. Because of this, 40% of my fathers
lung had to be cut off. With so many medications that he has to take, other side
effects such as depression, diabetes, and etc. had started happening too.
