dimensional.
How to use the different shading techniques.
How to create strong contrast between light and
dark values chiaroscuro.

Assignment
I can use at least 4 different shading techniques
in a drawing and with each technique I can show
a variety of different ranges of values from very
light to very dark.

 Vocabulary
1. Contrast: The difference between light and
dark areas in a drawing.
2. Implied Texture: The surface quality of an
object simulated by the artist.
3. Value Scale: A value scale shows the range of
values from black to white and light to dark.
4. Chiaroscuro: The Italian word meaning light to
dark- in a drawing its the area of the most
contrast.
5. Occlusion Shadow: the point in which an object
blocks light.
6. Terminator is the edge where the form
transitions from light to shadow

 Let's look at a contemporary
artist who today is using value
in her remarkable surreal
drawings.
I had a wonderful experience
working with this artist at a
teacher workshop
This awesome mural, entitled Elephants,
is an astonishing and enormous piece
created by artist Adonna Khare using
only carbon pencil
ArtPrize 2012 winner of $200,000 is 'Elephants' by Adonna Khare
Adonna Khare is an America Artist mainly focused on carbon pencil on paper
drawings. She received her Masters of Fine Art from California State University
Long Beach. Her work has been collected by prestigious public and private
collections throughout the world. In 2012 she won the world's largest art
competition ArtPrize, competing against over 1500 artists from all around the
world.

Shading Techniques
 WHERE ELSE ARE THESE
TEXTURAL TECHNIQUES USED IN
ART?
Painters create them to
create textures with
different brush strokes.
Sculptures carve them
into various mediums
like clay or bronze.
Comic Book artists use
them to show depth and
value in their characters
and scenes.
Video game designs use
them in their graphics.
Animators use them in
their movies.
Illustrators use them in
their books.
You can create them
with pen and ink, color
pencil, marker, ..
 Shading
Techniques
Tonal is a shading
technique that produces a
smooth line free range of
values. This is done by
using the side of the
pencil and layers of
graphite.

Hatching is a shading technique
that uses thin parallel lines that go
in the same direction of flow
around the shape.

When hatched lines are placed at an
angle to one another, it is criss cross
line method of shading called cross-
hatching.

Scumble is a shading technique
where the artist scribbles lines
and layers them to create
different values.

Pointillism also called Stippling is a technique
of drawing in which small, distinct dots are
applied in patterns to form an image

Techniques
Smudge can be done to any
shading technique. Smudge is a
smearing of the graphite into
the tooth of the paper. You can
use a paper stump or your
finger to rub/smudge the
graphite. Smudge is great for
skin texture, glass bottles and
metal.
