SOCIAL REALISM IN HINDI

CINEMA (BOLLYWOOD)
The world cinema journey began in silence.
Movies were created without sound as the
technology of sound was not available in the
beginning. A device did not exist that could
synchronise sound with the picture. Cinema
remained silent for the first 30 years until
sound technology was developed late in the
1920s
Social realism, an international art movement,
encompasses the work of painters, printmakers,
photographers and filmmakers who draw attention to
the everyday conditions of the working class and the
poor; social realists are critical of the social structures
which maintain these conditions. While the
movement's characteristics vary from nation to nation,
it almost always utilizes a form of descriptive or critical
realism.[1]
Social realism should not be confused with socialist
realism, the official Soviet art form that was
institutionalized by Joseph Stalin in 1934 and was later
adopted by allied Communist parties worldwide.[1]
Bollywood is the sobriquet for the Hindi language film industry based in Mumbai,
the most populous city of the Republic of India.[3] It is more formally referred to
as Hindi cinema.[4] The term "Bollywood" is often loosely used as a synecdoche to refer
to the whole ofIndian cinema; however, Bollywood proper is only a part of the
larger Indian film industry, which includes other production centres producing films in
many other Indian languages.[5]
Bollywood is one of the largest film producers in India, representing 43% of the net box
office revenue, while Telugu and Tamil cinema represent 36%, and the rest of the
regional cinema constitutes 21% as of 2014.[6] Bollywood is also one of the largest
centers of film production in the world.[7][8][9] Bollywood is also one of the biggest film
industries in the world in terms of the number of people employed and the number of
films produced.[10] In 2011, over 3.5 billion tickets were sold across the globe which in
comparison is 900,000 tickets more than Hollywood.[11] Bollywood produced 252 films
in 2014 out of a total of 1969 films produced inIndian cinema.

Literary realism is part of the realist art movement beginning with mid nineteenth-century
French literature (Stendhal), and Russian literature (Alexander Pushkin) and extending to the late
nineteenth and early twentieth century.[1] Literary realism, in contrast to idealism, attempts to
represent familiar things as they are.[2] Realist authors chose to depict everyday and banal

activities and experiences, instead of using a romanticized or similarly stylized presentation .

The Parallel Cinema movement began
to take shape from the late 1940s to
the 1960s, by pioneers such as Satyajit
Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Bimal Roy, Mrinal
Sen, Tapan Sinha,Khwaja Ahmad
Abbas, Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Chetan
Anand, Guru Dutt and V. Shantaram.
Alam Ara (Hindi: , Urdu: ,translation: The Ornament of the
World) is a 1931 Indian Bollywood Hindi/Urdu film directed by Ardeshir Irani.
It was the first Indian sound film.[1][2]
Irani recognised the importance that sound would have on the cinema, and
raced to complete Alam Ara before several contemporary sound films. Alam
Ara debuted at the Majestic Cinema in Mumbai (then Bombay) on 14 March
1931. The first Indian talkie was so popular that "police aid had to be
summoned to control the crowds."[3]
The film has long been lost and was not available as far back as 1967
according to the National Film Archive of India, Pune.[
