 So what is leadership? Why do we need it ?

Characteristics of leadership

 Influence

 It involves the leader and his followers – situation


and communication of what is wanted and
feedback.
 Reciprocal relationship between a leader and
his/her followers.
 acceptability to the followers.

 Gain acceptance through speech and behaviour.


Types of leaders

 The bureaucrat- sticks to routine, appeases


superiors, avoids subordinates and is apathetic to
and contemptuous of them.

 The autocrat- directive, expects obedience. The


subordinated tend to antagonistic towards him.
Types of leaders

 The diplomat- is opportunistic exploits people and


generally rouses distrust.
 The expert- is only concerned with his/her own
field of specialization. He/she treats his/her
subordinates as fellow workers.
Types of leaders

 The quarter back- identifies himself/herself


with his/her subordinates at the risk of
displeasing his/her superiors.

 The directive type- this leader initiates rewards


and penalties. The subordinates feel inferior to
him/her and are generally passive. Their moral is
low, and no leadership develops among them.
Types of leaders

 The permissive type – this leader initiates action


for others, has a high frustration tolerance, and is
sensitive to the feelings of others. He/ she gets the
job done but does not develop leaders.
 The participative type-this leader helps others to
develop their own initiative, take their own
decisions and formulate their procedures, who gets
them to recognize their own wants and wins their
co operation for achieving his/her objectives.
