But ONE UNIFIED STORY!
Why do we need to know about
the Big Story of the Bible?
The tragedy is that our eternal
welfare depends upon our
hearing, and we have trained
our ears not to hear.
What assumptions did we make about the book?
1. Creation
God created the world,
including human beings
(Genesis 12). He called
His own work very
good (Genesis 1:31).
The Big Story of the Bible
2. Fall
Adam and Eve sinned, and Gods perfect
creation began to deteriorate
(Genesis 311). God promised a
future redeemer (Genesis 3:15).
The Big Story of the Bible
3. Israel
God chose the descendants of
Abraham (Genesis 12:2
3) as the people through
whom Gods redemption
would come (Genesis 12
Malachi). The Law given
to Moses prepared the
way for Jesus sacrifice for
sin (Galatians 3:2425,
Hebrews 9:15).
The Big Story of the Bible
4. Jesus
Jesus is the Redeemer who was
foretold in the Old Testament
(Matthew 5:17, John 1:17,
Romans 10:4). The Gospels
(MatthewJohn) tell His life
story.
The Big Story of the Bible
5. Church
After Jesus death and resurrection,
God the Holy Spirit established
the Church. Most of the New
Testament (ActsRevelation)
gives instructions about how
people in the Church are
supposed to live. This stage will
end with the second coming of
Christ. We live in this stage!
The Big Story of the Bible
6. Restoration
This stage will begin with the general
resurrection at the second
coming of Christ and will last
forever. God will bring all things
in heaven and earth under Christ
(Ephesians 1:10). Every knee shall
bow and every tongue confess
that Jesus is Lord (Philippians
2:1011). There will be a new
heaven and earth (Revelation
21:12).
The Big Story of the Bible
As we study the Bible, its important that we know the
stage the passage were studying is located.
Later authors were able to look back on the past and see
what happened and what God did.
Earlier authors may have received divine revelation
(prophecy) about things to come.
i.e. Abraham received promised from God that were
fulfilled generations later with King David.
Matthew 11:10
Jesus quotes Malachi 3:1 when describing John the
Baptist
Malachi was written 450 years before the book of
Matthew!
How did Malachi know? Divine revelation
How did Matthew know? As one of the 12 disciples,
Matthew saw the fulfillment of Malachis prophecies in
his life!
Even though they occurred at different times and stages,
they still point to Jesus.
The Big Story of the Bible
Progressive revelation God revealed more about
Himself as the story progressed.
God revealed Himself to Abraham
God revealed more of Himself to Moses
Old Testament prophets knew what Abraham and
Moses did, but received more knowledge and insight as
God spoke to them.
Jesus and the Holy Spirit showed the believers in the
New Testament about Gods redemption and
restoration.
Genesis 15:1-6
In what stage of the Bible did this event take place?
