CONDITIONALS
Conditionals are sentences with two clauses

an if clause and a main clause that are

closely related. Conditional sentences are
often divided into different types.
Zero Conditional
First Conditional
Second Conditional
Third Conditional
Zero Conditional
We use the zero conditional to talk about things that are always
true.
We can make a zero conditional sentence with twopresent simple
verbs (one in the 'if clause' and one in the 'main clause'):

If/when + present simple, .... present simple.

This conditional is used when the result will always happen.

So, if water reaches 100 degrees, it always boils. It's a fact, talking
in general, not about one particular situation. The result of the 'if
clause' is always the main clause.

Example:
When the sun goes down, it gets dark.
It lights up if you push that button.
When I get up late I miss the bus
Lets practice
For example:
(not / rain / the flowers / die)

If it doesnt rain, the flowers die.

1. (I / wake up late / I / be late for work)

____________________________________________

2. (my husband / cook / he / burn the food)

______________________________________________

3. (Julie / not wear a hat / she / get sunstroke)

______________________________________________

4. (children / not eat well / they / not be healthy)

______________________________________________

5. (you / mix water and electricity / you / get a shock)

First Conditional
We use the first conditional when we talk
about real and possible situations.

The first conditional has thepresent simple

after 'if', then thefuture simple in the other
clause:
if + present simple, ... will + infinitive
It's used to talk about things which might
happen in the future. Of course, we can't
know what will happen in the future, but this
describes possible things, which could easily
come true.
Example:
If itrains, Iwon't goto the park.
If Istudytoday, I'll goto the party tonight.
If Ihaveenough money, I'll buysome new

shoes.
First vs. Zero Conditional
The first conditional describes aparticularsituation,
while thezero conditional describes what happensin
general.

For example (zero conditional):

if you sit in the sun, you get burned (here I'm talking

about every time a person sits in the sun - the burning

is a natural consequence of the sitting)

But (first conditional):

if you sit in the sun, you'll get burned (here I'm talking

about what will happen today, another day might be

different)
Lets practice
1. If you______ (not study), you______ (fail) the test.

2. We ________(die) if we ______(not get) help soon!

3. If you________ (look) in the fridge, you ______ (find)

some cold sodas.

4. If there_______ (be) no oil in the engine, the car

_________(break) down.

5. I ____________(lend) you my umbrella if you______

(need) it.
