Compliment

Compliment is an expression to
appreciate or praise other people.

Compliment is useful to give


encouragement, so that people will keep on
doing their best and even improve their
performance.
Nadya : Wow! Thats a great dress! Is it new?
Tania : Yes it is.Its nice of you to say so.
Nadya : The color and the model are suit on
you.
Tania : Oh, do you really like so? Im really
happy.
Nadya : Yes of course. Did you make it by
yourself?
Tania : Of course, not. My aunt gave it to me
as a birthday gift.
Nadya : What a beautiful dress do you have!
Tania : Thanks.
Cultural awareness
There are some different ways in giving and
responding compliments.
In Indonesia, people do not tend to give
compliment spontaneously and they tend to
refuse the compliments given.
In English, people tend to give compliment
spontaneously of what they see and feel. They
also tend to accept the sincere compliments.
There are types of compliments we can give someone:

1. Personal possessions games, collections, books, objects


2. Appearance clothes, hair, smile
3. Personality funny, happy, friendly, smart
4. Talents piano, athletic, sing, dance, artist
5. Skills reading, math, building

There are formulations of compliment

How + Adjective + Noun + is/are.


Noun Phrase + is/look + (really) + Adjective.

Noun/Pronoun + (really) + like/love + Noun


What + Adjective + Noun. Phrase.
Example :
How big house is.
How kind friends are.
How beautiful you are
What a beautiful flower.
What a wonderful job.
His father really like his test result.
All teachers really love your commitments.
Ricky : Hello, Matt. How are you doing?

Matthew : Im very well, thanks. What about you?

Ricky : Pretty good, Pals. By the way I heard from Jim that you
won the English competition last week.

Mathew : Yes, I did.

Ricky : That was awesome man. You are great.

Mathew : Thank you. Would you want some ice cream? Ill treat
you.

Ricky : It sounds good. Lets go.

Mathew : Yeah, come on. Lets go.


Harsya: What a great Motorcycle you have, Pandu.

Pandu : Thank you, Harsya. I just finished modifying it.

Harsya: You mean this is the old motorcycle that you used to drive
to school?
Pandu : Yes, it is.

Harsya: It looks a lot different. What did you do to it?

Pandu : Not much. I had it paint with a brighter colour and add
some new ccessories.

Harsya: Great job!
