 Role of housing
Housing refers to a group of dwelling units grouped together along with
facilities/social infrastructure and utilities/ physical infrastructure
Housing is a wealth forming physical commodity.
Housing develops economy of the nation.
One of the major sectors providing employment.
It is an economic commodity- product- that can be traded or exchanged.
It is a very expensive product that is also rigid i.e difficult to modify.
It has elastic functions multiple uses are possible.
As it is a basic need, it is a responsibility of a nations government as a social or
collective responsibility.
Importance of housing
It gives shelter, privacy and safety to a single household.
Housing is one of the strongest instruments we have in breaking the cycle of
poverty.
Housing improves household health and well-being, leading to increased time
on the job and in school.
In turn, this contributes to family income and education which are both
essential to helping families lift themselves out of poverty.
Contributes to overall economic growth, social uplift and employment.
Deepens, broadens and stabilizes the financial sector.
Construction and related sectors constitute 9% of the labour force worldwide.
Housing makes 15-40% of monthly household expenditure worldwide.
Increases national savings and investments.
A lack of adequate housing not only compromises development, but eventually
also constitutes a security threat from myriad social ills that arise from
homelessness.

DWELLING UNIT
"Dwelling unit" means a structure or the part of a structure that is used as a
home, residence or sleeping place by one person who maintains a household or
by two or more persons who maintain a common household.
Dwelling unit is a room or suite of rooms operated as a self-contained
housekeeping unit that includes independent cooking, eating, living, sleeping
and bathroom facilities.
