Course Goals
Understanding the purpose of Arabic grammar.
Building on our previous knowledge of the Arabic
language by gaining a birds-eye view of key
grammatical concepts.
Applying our knowledge to gain a deeper
understanding and appreciation of the texts.
Preparing one to formally study a full text of Arabic
grammar.
Why Did Arabic Grammar Develop?
The incident of Abul Aswad al-Duali:

when Abul Aswad passed by a man, [the man] recited,


God is disassociated from the unbelievers and from His
Prophet. [ 9:3] Abul Aswad was shocked. He returned
immediately to Ziyad and said to him, I would like to
comply with what you asked me to do and I feel it is best
to start with the inflection of the Quran.

The Purpose of Grammar
Grammar is defined as: Knowledge by which one
knows the rulings related to the end of words when
placed in a sentence.
