Background
RC structures designed according to present building codes
as moment resisting space frames, shear-walls, coupled
shear-walls
expected to deform well into the inelastic range and
dissipate the energy input by the base motion
it is essential to seismically evaluate the building with the
present day knowledge to avoid the major destruction in
the future earthquakes
the structural engineering profession has been using the
nonlinear static procedure (NSP) or pushover analysis
Contd
when pushover analysis is used carefully, it provides useful
information that cannot be obtained by linear static or
dynamic analysis procedures
Reinforced concrete (RC) frames with unreinforced
masonry infill walls are commonly used as the structural
system for buildings in many seismically active regions
around the world
infill walls are generally treated as non-structural elements,
because they are used mainly for architectural purposes,
and structural engineers often ignore them during
structural design.
Contd
During earthquakes, infill walls affect the response of the
structure,
Infill walls contribute to the lateral force resisting capacity
and damping
Infill walls increase the initial stiffness and decrease the
fundamental period of the structure
Unfortunately, India, Nepal and other countries lag in this
area.
Rationale
Nepal lies in the boundary of Indian plate and Eurasian plate
(Bilham et al 1998)
Nepal has seen many major earthquakes over past 100 year
Many lives have been claimed by these events
Traditionally built houses and violation of seismic code are
the key reasons.
Thus the newly built structure needs to perform effectively in
the seismic event
the non-linear analysis (Push-over) of the RC frames will be
done
Contd
RC frames are mostly filled with infill wall in all types
of buildings. Thus, the response of the RC frames with
infill wall will be evaluated and analyzed
taking a case of land revenue office building located at
Chabahil, Kathmandu
this building represents a typical government office
building of Nepal.
Objective
To identify the non-linear pushover analysis response of the
Land Revenue office building

Specific Objectives
To obtain the capacity curve of the building.
To study the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete frame
infilled by brick masonry and compare the result with of bare
frames.
To evaluate the performance of the building in the inelastic
phase during earthquake
Scope and Limitation
Particular building is chosen for the analysis
Pushover analysis will be done using SAP 2000.
Macro model will be used to model the infill walls.
Monotonic loading will be applied to the model.
Doors will be avoided in the infill walls
Pushover Analysis
analysis is a static, nonlinear procedure in which the
magnitude of the structural loading is incrementally
increased in accordance with a certain predefined pattern
the structure begins to yield and become damaged as the
load increases
the structural deficiencies and failure modes of the building
become apparent.
The loading is monotonic (i.e., in a single direction) with
the effects of the load reversals that occur during a real
earthquake being estimated by using modified monotonic
force-deformation criteria
Contd
with damping approximations.
The goal is to evaluate the real strength of the existing
structure
nonlinear static analysis with an emphasis on RC frame
buildings with masonry infill walls. Pushover analysis is
demonstrated using the computer software SAP 2000
Contd
FEMA 356 and ATC 40 documents define force-
deformation criteria for potential locations of lumped
inelastic behaviour, designated as plastic hinges used in
pushover analysis.
As shown in Figure below, five points define the force
deformation behaviour of the plastic hinge
