Meaning of Subject-Verb Agreement

Definition: Subject-verb agreement means the correspondence

of a verb with its subject, in person and in number, within a
sentence.
In order to make a grammatically correct sentence, there must
be agreement between the subject and the verb in the
sentence.
However, there are some rules guiding the relationship
between the subject and the verb in sentences.
Subject-Verb Agreement Rules 1 & 2
Rule 1- A verb agrees with its subject in number.
Singular subjects (He, Beth, airplane) take singular verbs ( is,
takes, flies).
Example: Beth take/takes coffee every morning. Since Beth (the
subject) is singular, you will choose takes for the verb.

Plural subjects take plural verb.

Example: Beth and Amy take coffee every morning.
They are going to the beach.
Subject-Verb Agreement Rules 1 & 2

Rule 2 The number of the subject (singular or plural) is not

changed by words that come between the subject and the
verb.
Example: The bouquet of yellow flowers is/are on the table.
Here the subject is bouquet not yellow flowers so the correct
verb would be is.
