Aerodynamics 2

RAJMANOVA R
PRE REQUISTIC
Basics of fluid mechanics
Concepts from aerodynamics I
1.Three fundamental equations
2.Airfoil nomenclatures
3.Thin airfoil theory concept
4.Lifting line theory concept
5.Boundary layer concept
WHY?
Concepts learned in aerodynamics I has been
developed based on the assumption of
incompressibility (i.e density is constant )
But in real case , all fluid have the
compressibility effect.
So in aerodynamics II we will transform the
equations derived in aerodynamics I to a form
that recognize the effect of compressibility.
Where ?
Designing a aircraft always starts with getting
the specifications from the customers and
designing will be based on the
force(aerodynamic force) that the aircraft is
going to encounter.
So methods involving the
evaluation/prediction of aerodynamic
force( theoretically and experimentally) will be
discussed in this course.
Syllabus outline
FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS OF
COMPRESSIBLE FLOW .
SHOCK AND EXPANSION WAVES .
TWO DIMENSIONAL COMPRESSIBLE
FLOW .
HIGH SPEED FLOW OVER AIRFOILS, WINGS
AND AIRPLANE CONFIGURATION .
EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES FOR HIGH
SPEED FLOWS .
FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS OF
COMPRESSIBLE FLOW .
As said earlier basic fundamental (continuity,
momentum and energy)incompressible
equations will be rewritten in terms of
compressibility .
Introducing necessary important parameters
and deriving expressions relating these
parameters .
Numericals
SHOCK AND EXPANSION WAVES
Introduction of shock waves which includes
oblique , normal and expansion waves.
Further , equations which is used to determine
the characteristics of theses waves will be
derived , along with this important parameters
and its relation will be discussed.
Interaction of waves : In this chapter, students
will learn what happens ;when waves ,which
are discussed earlier interact with each.
TWO DIMENSIONAL COMPRESSIBLE
FLOW
So far all equations are considered as potential
flow( irrotational compressible flow), but in
actual , all real flows are rotational flow.
so in this chapter, potential equation for 2d
case is derived. Then it was further rewritten
for the case of rotational flow.
HIGH SPEED FLOW OVER AIRFOILS, WINGS AND AIRPLANE CONFIGURATION

This chapter will introduce concepts which

will influence the design of supersonic
aircraft.
Then in this unit students will learn how to
find aerodynamic forces for such supersonic
profiles(aerofoil).
EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES FOR HIGH SPEED FLOWS .

So far , the techniques and methods learned

will come under theoretical approach.
But this unit will give students an opportunity
to learn the ways to determine the important
aerodynamic forces and parameters through
experiments .
This units includes various types of wind
tunnel and flow visualization techniques.
