Summary writing involves students to brief their understanding in writing
making most from the lecture.
Objectives:
To involve student to be engaged at the end of the lecture.
Let students identify the topics that are clearly understood and not out of
each lecture.
Active Learning Techniques Plan
Plan:
This activity was planned for one unit which consisted of 6 lectures.
Execution:
At the end of each lecture the students were given 10 minutes to
summarize their understanding.
The students were then asked to revise all the summary sheets and
provide the conclusions like rating of their answers and clarity in
concepts.
Active Learning Techniques Plan
Observations/ Outcomes:
During the summary writing the students were actively participating and
enjoyed evaluating the peers.
It is observed that the students approached to clarify their droughts with
specific questions rather than asking to explain the entire topic.
This activity was easy to implement even with a large size class.
The observed benefits of summary writing are as follows:
After completion of the activity each student could:
Identify the topics that were clearly understood and not understood.
Identify the topics that were simple and complex.
Self and peer evaluate the summary and make comments.
Active Learning Techniques Plan
Feedback:
The following are few comments from the students:
Summary writing was like a self-study with ease
I clearly know on what I should revise at the end of lecture.
The summary of each lecture maintained facilitated to map the concepts of
the entire unit.
Nice practice to learn and clarify in the same lecture.
Conclusion/Summary:
Summary writing was very useful for both the students and faculty to get
feedback about the students level of understanding. It briefed the students
understanding in their own words and was easy to implement in a class with
large number of students. The comments provided by the students are in
favor of the activity.
