Goals:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to describe
how Mass Media benefits our country and how it can harm
our country.

Objectives:
Content/Knowledge:
Students will research the pros and cons of Mass Media in
the United States and present their findings to the class.

Process/Skills:
Students will debate, write articles, and give presentations
to discuss Mass Media.

Values/Dispositions:
Students will explain how Mass Media affects us and if it
should be as big of a priority to us as it is.

Rationale:
This lesson is important because Mass Media is
everywhere. Students are exposed to media from a very
young age, and it is important to know how it is good and
what they should be careful of.

Standards:
State Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards
SS.IS.5.6-8.MC: Develop claims and counterclaims while
pointing out the strengths and limitations of both.

Students will put on the white hat and become a reporter that
presents only the facts. They have no bias and no opinions in
their work.
They will research an event of their choice (the same as the
intuitive student) write a short article about it, presenting only
the facts.

presents stories with lots of bias. They have a lot of opinions
in their work.
They will research an event of their choice (the same as the
objective student) write a short article about it, including

the debater that thinks positively of Mass Media.
The student will debate with the negative debater and
will hold the stance of why Mass Media is good for us.
The debate will be recorded.

Students will put on the black hat and will become the
debater that thinks negatively of Mass Media.
The student will debate with the positive debater and will
hold the stance of why Mass Media is bad for us. The debate
will be recorded.

Students will put on the green hat and become the person
that always finds another way to make Mass Media beneficial
for the country.
The student will come up with another way to use Mass
Media to make it help the community we live in and present it
to the class on a PowerPoint.

Students will put on the blue hat and pretend to be someone
researching how many people have access to Mass Media
and how it is used.
They will create a poster explaining the different uses and
effects of Mass Media.

Visual Learning, Assessment, and Online Resources:
Visual Learning: Students will have visual
representation by watching students present their posters and
PowerPoint presentations.
Assessment:
1. Students will be assessed based upon the product of their
work. (i.e. video recording, PowerPoint, article, etc.)
