A Brief Introduction
Codes VS Standards
What is the difference between the terms
Codes and Standards?
Both are collection of rules and procedures,
but:
Code usually implies legally binding..Traffic
Code, Indian Penal Code etc
Standard usually implies a voluntary model,
like ISO 9000 etc.
Standards
Standards just affect everything in our daily life
and professional life.
Food, clothing, cars, computers, industry
standards, etc.
Standards set the bench mark to which
everything else is measured, thereby removing
trade barriers and promoting competition.
Standards provide confidence, reliability and
compatibility in the market place.
What is a Code?
A standard becomes a Code when it has been
adopted by one or more governmental
agencies and is enforceable by law or when it
has been incorporated in a business contract.
What is a Standard?
A Standard can be defined as a set of
definitions and guidelines that function as
instructions to designers, manufacturers,
operators or users of equipment.
Standards, not having the force of law, are
considered voluntary and serve as guidelines.
It also provide stamps that accredited
manufacturers affix on to their products.
ASME BPVC Section I
The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel (BPVC)
Code is a standard that provides rules for
design, fabrication and inspection of boilers
and pressure vessels.
The first Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (1914)
was published in 1915, 1 book, 114 pages.
Today it has 28 books, with support documents.
Other Sections
Section II: Materials
Section III: Nuclear Facility Components
Section IV: Heating Boilers-Construction
Section V: Non-destructive examination
Section VI: Heating Boilers: Operation
Section VII: Guidelines for Power Boilers
Section VIII: Pressure Vessels-Construction
Other Sections..
Section IX: Welding & Brazing Qualifications
Section X: Fiber reinforced Plastic Pressure vessels
Section XI: In-service Inspection-Nuclear power
plat components
Section XII: Transport tank-Construction and
service
Code cases: Boilers & pressure Vessels
Code Cases: Nuclear Components
ASME BPVC Section II
Part A: Ferrous material Specifications
This part is supplementary book referred by other
sections of the Code.
It provides material specifications for ferrous materials,
which are suitable for use in the construction of
pressure vessels.
Mechanical properties, heta treatment, chemical
composition, test specimens, testing methodologies.
The designation start with SA taken from ASTM A
spec.
ASME BPVC Section II
Part B: Non-Ferrous Materials Specifications
Part C: Specifications for welding rods,
electrodes and filler materials.
Part D: Properties ( Customary/ Metric)
This part is a supplementary book referred by
other sections of the Code. It provides tables
for design stress values as well as tables for
material properties.
ASME BPVC Section III
Rules for construction of nuclear facility
components and supports.
To be installed in a nuclear power system that
serves the purpose of producing and
controlling the output of thermal energy from
nuclear fuel and associated systems.
Deterioration in service due to radiation
effects not addressed.
ASME BPVC Section VIII
Division 1: This division covers the mandatory
requirements, specific prohibitions and non
mandatory guidance for materials, design,
fabrication, inspection and testing, markings
and reports, over-pressure protection and
certification of pressure vessels having an
internal or external pressure which exceeds 15
psi ( 100 kPa). The pressure can be either fired
or unfired.
ASME BPVC Section VIII
Division 2.Alternate Rules:
The rules contained in this section can be used
as an alternative to the minimum requirements
specified in Division 1. More onerous hence
higher stress intensity values allowed.
Division 3. Alternate Rules..High Pressure
For pressure which exceed 10000psi (70000kPa)
ISO
ISO (International Organization for
Standardization) is the worlds largest
developer of voluntary International
Standards. International Standards give state
of the art specifications for products, services
and good practice, helping to make industry
more efficient and effective. Developed
through global consensus, they help to break
down barriers to international trade barriers.
