Waterproofing

What is Waterproofing ?
Definition of Waterproof

Water-proof or water-resistant
describes objects relatively unaffected
by water or resisting the ingress of
water under specified conditions. Such
items may be used in wet
environments or under water to
specified depths. Waterproofing
describes making an object waterproof
or water-resistant
Waterproofing is a membrane, coating,
or sealer used in concealed to prevent
water from entering such structures.

It can be applied to substrates and

background such as :

Concrete

Cement render

Gypsum
Characteristics of Waterproofing

Impermeable - to prevent the passage of

water.

Flexibility - to accommodate any normal

movement in building structure

Durable - integrity over a long period of time.

Suitability - for each specific application.

Breathability - permitting the escape of

moisture vapors

Lightweight, non hazardous, and

environmentally safe.

Easy maintenance

The Importance of Waterproofing

Rotting of structure and finishes

Corrosion of metal

Electrical hazard

Blistering of paint

Deterioration of building faade

Dampness

Rotting of carpet
Types of waterproofing

MEMBRANE

SHEET MEMBRANE

The purpose is to completely

cover any imperfections in the
substrate or background.

They are numerous and include:

Metal sheets in the form of lead,
copper or stainless steel flashing
or trays.

Butyl rubber sheeting

Semi-rigid asbestos asphalt

sheeting

Bitumen/polyethylene sheets
Types of waterproofing

MEMBRANE

LIQUID MEMBRANE

Some of the liquid membranes

available are:

1. Mastic asphalt

2. Flexible epoxy resin two parts

3. Bitumen latex modified single

pack
Types of waterproofing

CEMENTIOUS

Cementitious coatings / polymer

products have only 15-20 percent of
the market.

Often used in concrete repair

and refurbishment work

The easiest waterproofing

materials to use
Types of waterproofing

BENTONITE CLAY

Advantages:

Can absorb a
tremendous amount of
water, Its safe to work
with, non-polluting,
easy and quick to
apply, and can go on
even at low
temperatures
Types of waterproofing

DAMP PROOF COURSE (DPC)

A damp proof course ( DPC ) is a

physical barrier inserted into the
fabric of a building to stop water
passing from one place to another.

This can be:-

On a horizontal plane =
stopping water rising up from the
ground by being sucked up by
the dry masonry above.

Vertically plane = to stop water

passing from the outside of a
building, though the masonry, to
the inside.
