RAIN WATER IN INDIA

Total annual rainfall in India: 400 million hectare-

meters (area x height)
Actual distribution:
Highly skewed area-wise
The desert receives less than 200mm annually,
while Cherrapunji receives 11,400mm
But almost every part of India receives at least
100mm annually
WHAT IS RAIN WATER HARVESTING?

Rainwater harvesting is the process of

augmenting the natural filtration of
rainwater in to the underground formation
by some artificial methods.
"Conscious collection and storage of
rainwater to cater to demands of water, for
drinking, domestic purpose & irrigation is
termed as Rainwater Harvesting."

Domestic rainwater harvesting
system consist of:
a collection surface,
a storage tank, and
guttering or channels to
transport the water from
one to the other.

Peripheral equipment
sometimes incorporated:
a first-flush system,
a filtration equipment,
and
settling chambers

Filtration
It is important to fit a filter before the water enters
the rainwater storage tank, this is to stop any
debris accumulation
or organic matter getting into the tank.
Rainwater is passed into the filter.
Filter removes larger and small dirt particles
away to drain.
Filter, gives clean water to the tank.

Pump Set
There are different types of pumps, but this one is
a suction pump.
The pump draws in water from the tank, via a
float filter.
All the water will be pumped to all the outlets in
the property, we must always protect the pump
from dry running.
Floating Pump Intake
The Floating Pump Intake attaches to a
hose and floats just below the surface of
the water, therefore getting the
cleanest water out of the storage tank.
This stops any dirt or sediment blocking
the filter.

Float switch
The float switch opens a solenoid valve
when the rainwater is low in the storage
tank.
This then allows the mains back up to
kick in, once the storage tank is
replenished with rainwater the solenoid
will switch off allowing the rainwater to
be used from the tank.
Overflow
The overflow must be trapped to retain a
plug of water to prevent foul smells from
entering the tank.

Anti-surcharge valve
The anti-backflow damper prevents
ground or surface water from getting
back into the rainwater tank and
contaminating the rainwater.
This also protects the tank from any
rodents.

Control panel
This control panel has all the
electrical components, to control the
rainwater pump and three port
valves.
