Muscular System

Kristen Lloyd and Awais Ahmad

Muscle
A muscle is a bundle of fibrous tissue in an animal's body that has the ability to
contract, producing movement or keeping position of parts in a body

The muscular system is responsible for the movement of the human body

There are roughly 700 different muscles in the human body

Types of Muscles
There are three main types of muscles:

Smooth (visceral),Skeletal, and Cardiac.

Visceral Muscle
Found in some organs such as
the: stomach, intestines and most importantly, blood vessels.

Gives these organs and blood vessels the power to contract and move
substances throughout the organ, which can only be done because there are
no striations.

Involuntary muscle - cannot be directly controlled by the conscious mind.

Also known as smooth muscle because of its smooth appearance.

Skeletal
The only voluntary muscle - controlled consciously.

The function is to contract to move parts of the body closer

to the bone that the muscle is attached to.

Striated, meaning they are very strong

Called skeletal because they connect to the skeleton in at

least one place.

Cardiac
As the name entails, this muscle is found only in the heart.

Is both striated and involuntary.

These muscles are responsible for pumping blood to the body.

The cells are branched in the muscle, interlocking

together to become very strong.

Because of this bonding of cells, the heart can resist high blood
pressures and strain from constantly moving.
Technological Developments
Artificial muscles - Contraction, expansion, rotation

Massage therapy - manipulation of the different muscles to soothe and relax the
muscles.

Treatment for Muscular Dystrophy - medications and therapy to slow the

progress of the disease
Inserting a dystrophin gene into the muscle

Muscle building medicine to slow or even reverse the progress

Homeostasis
When your body gets cold, you start to shiver
Homeostasis in the skeletal muscles by generating heat to put the body back to normal
temperature (37 )

Homeostasis plays many roles in the heart

Heart rate is the most common example of the muscles using homeostasis. Your heart rate
increases when exercising to get enough oxygen to your body then decreases when the body
is at rest
