What are the correlations between

sleep and academics?

Karina Castillo, Jade Sims, Tram Tran, & Hanson Vuong
Abstract
The issue of academics and sleep has created a conflict on whether sleep or academics is the best
choice in the long run. The purpose of this procedure is to determine whether high school students
(specifically freshmen and seniors) get enough sleep as well as spend the time to achieve the
necessary criteria for graduation. In order to collect data, surveys are handed out to classrooms and
the answers used will contribute to the charts/results. Based on the data, a majority of these
students do not get the recommended sleep and all 4 groups have shown that there is no
correlation between sleep and extracurricular activities along with academics, but rather the amount
of time spent on homework with grades since the freshmen AP/honors had 22.6% with 4.0+ G.P.A
due to 32.6% of the data spending 4-6 hours on homework while 61.2% of the seniors had more
4.0+ G.P.A with 25.8% of the seniors spending 4-6 hours on homework. Upon these results, policy
makers, parents, and school officials may need to reconsider which is more important for
adolescents; health or academics. Thus, further research should help result in promoting new
changes such as when school starts, later/earlier bedtimes, or new programs which may help suit
individuals based on their needs.
Background
Why do we NEED sleep?
Not same as rest
Has relative loss of awareness & responsiveness
to external world
Necessary for restorative processes during
sleep
Involves changing patterns
Goals
Find correlations between the amount of
sleep & types of classes teenagers
take in high school
specifically between freshmens &
seniors
Difference in patterns between AP/Honors
and regular?
Do H.S students get enough sleep?
PROCEDURE
1. Type 5. Input
2. Print 6. Collect More
3. Ask 7. Input More
4. Collect 8. Analyze

PROBLEMS
Relies completely on chance
Ran out of classes
Answers are too broad
Data may be false
Controls
Students get less than required amount

and 2.0 G.P.A.

Expected sleep causes a significant raise

to the grades.
Average of Sleep
Homework
Average Weighted G.P.A.
Extra Curricular Activities
Sleep Survey(NEW)
1. Gender: Male Female

2. Grade: Senior Freshman

3. Ethnicity : _________

4. How many hours of sleep (on average) do you get on a school night?
0 4-6 Hours
1-3 Hours 7+ Hours

5. Check all after school activities that apply.

Sports Band (drumline, steel drums, jazz, orchestra)
Clubs Other: ________________
6. On average how many hours a week day do you spend on extracurricular activities?
0 4-6 Hours
1-3 Hours 7+ Hours
7. On average how many hours do you spend participating in extracurriculars on the weekends?
0 4-6 Hours
1-3 Hours 7+ Hours
8. Are you in any AP/Honors classes? If so, how many?
_____
9. How many hours of studying/ homework do you spend each day on hw?
Less than an hour 4-6 Hours
1-3 Hours
10. What is your average GPA? (weighted)
0-1.99 3-3.99
2-2.99 4.00 or above
Conclusion
Hypothesis:
AP students = less sleep + higher grades
Regular students = more sleep + lower grades
AP students take more extracurricular activities
Actual Results:
Sleep patterns and Ecas relatively consistent
AP/Honors students spent more time on HW
AP/Honors=more 4.00- and above
Students do not get enough sleep
Conclusion cont.
Flaws with survey:
Not multiple choice
Difficult to distribute
Falsified data

Future Improvements:
Additional detailed questions
Collect more data from a variety of classes
Online survey (Multiple choice)
Conclusion cont.
Flaws with study:
Data may be false
Location may affect results
Cant change survey during experiment
Questions and answers must be general
Conclusion cont.
IMPORTANCE:
Less sleep DOESNT = low grades
Use of time= grades
Source of targeting sleep deprivation patterns
and correcting them
