ENVIRONMENT

WITHIN A CAR DOOR

PRESENTED BY

NITISH RANJAN
INTRODUCTION
Climatic condition occurring within the wet
compartment of car.
Water enter into the door compartment as
a result of rainfall ,the washing of vehicle
or driven through deep water.
In vapour form, moisture enter the simply
as a result of high ambient
humidity, caused by a result of humid
whether conditions or storing of car in a
damp
In order to quantify the amount of
moisture within the door, humidity&
temperature sensors were positioned in
various locations within the door ,and
outside the vehicle& within the passenger
compartment.
The rate of water passing through the door
is measured.
Test vehicle volkswagon golf was acquired
for the study & the entire door, including
its various systems & components, was
examined.
CAR DOOR
Feature of a modern car door
It consists of an external skin, a
frame, a side impact bar & a bolt-on
module to which all of the door
systems are attached.
In other features it have external
window seal.
WAYS OF ENTERING MOISTURE
INTO DOOR COMPARTMENT
1.SEAL
It prevents water from running down
the window into car compartment.
It also allow window to move up and
down, so it allow the water running
down the window.
2.DRAIN HOLES AT THE BOTTOM
OF THE DOOR
They are protected from spray from
the road by an external rubber flap,
these holes are not sealed
JAWS OF RETENTION
MECHANISM
Striker on the B-pillar must enter
these jaws in order to engage in this
area thus vulnerable to moisture
ingression
DATA ACQUISATION SYSTEM

Quantitative & qualitative data within the

door compartment during dynamic testing
is taken.
Temperature & humidity measurement
were taken within the wet compartment of
the door.
Data were collected from electrical sensors
& recorded at regular intervals on a laptop
computer using data logging hardware &
software.
TYPE OF SENSOR USED FOR
TESTING
1.Resistive humidity sensor is made by selective
group and had an operative envelope of 0 degree
Celsius to 50 degree Celsius ,20-100% RH.
2.Capacitive sensor has accuracy of 2%RH,and as
operating temperature range of -40 degree
Celsius to 85 degree Celsius.
3.Third sensor is a larger combined humidity &
temperature sensing module made by Mercator
&has accuracy of 5%RH at 35 degree
celsius&.7%RH at 25 -40 degree Celsius .
FUNCTIONS OF SENSOR
Resistive sensor has found non-linear
relationship bt output voltages &
humidity.
Other two type of sensor gave linear
relationship bt output voltages &
humidity.
DATA LOGGING SOFT WARE
It recorded input voltages for each of
eight channels to 3 decimal places
with different sensors accuracy
varies between to 2% to 5%.Relative
accuracy of data-logging hardware to
+1 to -1LSB.
TEST PROCEDURE AND RESULT
Sensors are calibrated so that
variable voltage drops could be
accurately converted into relative
humidity and temperature data.
For this sensor is placed in climatic
chamber, whose temperature and
humidity could be accurately
controlled over a period of time.
DRY,DAYTIME TEST
Monitoring of RH &Temp within a
door on a average day with no
rainfall.
When the engine was
-40 degree Celsiusrunning heater
turned, the temp of passenger
rapidly and this result in drop in RH.
When the engine and heater turned
off then temp drops & results in
drops in RH.
OVERNIGHT TESTS

In this test temperature & humidity

within a car door varies overnight.
For this purpose vehicle was parked
outside with the data logging
equipment until the morning.
Early in the morning when temp is
low RH is high.
In night when temp is little to high
RH is higher.
CAR WASH TEST
Car washes uses a set of cycle of
sprays and rotating brushes to clean
the vehicle.
In car wash test is performed on the
Perspex panel which cause rise in the
door temp.
JET WASH TEST

In this test user manipulates first

high pressure jet of dilute detergent
and then low pressure source with
brush to manually clean the vehicle.
This test IS PERFORMED on the
open spaces and uses cold water
only.
In both test temp changes result
change in the door conditions.
DRIVE IN RAIN TEST
In this test vehicle is tested in wet and
running condition.
Difficultly in testing is changes in these
variables.
Observation made is very little water
appeared to enter the door panel.
RH drops depend on the temp.
Changes in temp is caused due to the use
of vehicle heater.
Temp drop is due to the cooling within the
door
SPRAY TEST
This test is carried in the tropical
rainstorm condition.
Heavy downpour was simulated using
spray guns mounted at a height and
orientation delivers the flow rate of water .
Target area of spray was door window.
It clearly shows increase in humidity in
nights.
CONCLUSION
For a given volume of water as the
temp rises RH drops.
In all the test RH not changes
significantly unless temp within the
temp changes.
These conditions are helpful in
determining in design consideration
of component.
