Metropolitan & Micropolitan
Statistical Areas (MSA/McrSA)
Metropolitan Statistical Area
(MSA)
Defined by the Federal Office of Management and
Budget (OMB).
MSAs have a high degree of economic and social
integration with that core. This interaction, measured
by commuting, means that at least 25 percent of
people in outlying areas are working in the core.
An MSA consists of one or more counties that contain
a city of 50,000 or more inhabitants, or contain a
Census Bureau-defined urbanized area (UA) and have
a total population of at least 100,000 (75,000 in New
England).
Counties containing the principal concentration of
populationthe largest city and surrounding densely
settled areaare components of the MSA.

Micropolitan Statistical Area (McrSA)
Defined by the Federal Office of Management and
Budget (OMB). The Micropolitan Statistical Area
(McrSA) designation was created in 2003.
Centered on an urban cluster (urban area) with a
population at least 10,000 but less than
50,000. Outlying areas included are, again, defined
by commuting patterns (at least 25 percent of
people in outlying areas are working in the core).
Micropolitan cities do not have the economic or
political importance of large cities, but are
nevertheless significant centers of population and
production, drawing workers and shoppers from a
wide local area.

Size and Quality
These sectors reflect the overall growth in size and
quality. The quality of the economy is based
upon what people earn, as this influences their
standard of living more than anything.

Reactive Industries
These sectors reflect how the economy is behaving.
Small businesses and the construction and retail
industries are extremely reactive to the flow of
money coming into an area. They typically grow or
decline in direct proportion to the condition of
the economy.

Economic Impacts
Newly designated MSAs may be in a better
position to draw down federal funds.
The MSA designation increases the
amount and detail of economic
information provided by federal and state
statistical agencies on the region.
Both the MSA and the McrSA designation
may raise the marketing profile of the
region, particularly with respect to national
or multi-state site selection searches.
