In what ways does your media product use,

develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?
The forms and conventions that I identified in my research were all obviously conventional to pop magazine as this was
the genre I chose to base my magazine around. One of the main conventions I identified were mastheads, mastheads
are one of the most important parts of a magazine as they are often the largest texts on the page along with being one
of the main attributes to identifying the genre of the magazine youre looking at. Mastheads will as I said be the largest
text on the page, they will be the main attribute to finding out what they genre of the magazine is, they will also often
be an exciting and conventional text and they will be designed with drawing in the audience in mind. Another
convention that I could easily identify in my research was main images, main images will be the biggest image on the
page and will often be an indication to what the main storey or subject of that months magazine is. The main image is a
convention that all magazines will use without fail. Cover lines are a smaller and lesser conventions but never the less
they are a vital part to a conventional magazine. Cover lines are a combination of lesser stories that are not as
important as the main images story or subject but is important enough to make it onto the front cover of the magazine
and sometimes an image to give insight to the story in question. Straplines/banners are a way of advertising or again
giving insight to something within the magazine; they will usually be positioned on the top or bottom of the magazine
and will be in bright colours in my case as I am designing a pop magazine. I also included many puffs, which again is a
typical convention for magazines, pop magazines in particular. Puffs contribute to making the magazine much more
exciting as they tend to be very unruly and obnoxious shapes. This again is conventional to a pop magazine, as I have
said before. I did find that I did try to challenge the typical magazine. However, I did this subtlety, I made my
magazine/media project exaggerate the stories, cover lines and most of what was included within my project. I did this
to try to make my audience realise how exaggerated the media is, especially within magazines.
contents
When I designed my contents page, again I had my audience in mind, as I want to capture
their attention. However, I designed it with the conventions in mind also. The contents page
will usually include a larger image within its self to show the months feature. A pop
magazine contents page will also include an issue date and a barcode for obvious reasons. A
pop magazine contents page is likely to also include a masthead similar if not the same to
the front cover. A contents page within the pop genre can include some smaller images to
make the page seem more cluttered as this is how I have found the pop genre to be. These
are all of the conventions I have tried to include within my pop magazine contents page. I
have also included a strapline as these are conventional to pop and this is my genre. I have
also added in a writers message as I have seen them frequently in my research.
Double page spread
I have also designed my double page spread with my audience in mind as
intended. I have done this by using a series of conventions that have made
themselves clear to me throughout my project and the research that i undertook.
The double page spread conventionally will only include one image that will most
often be larger than the text on the double page spread. This is why i have
included one image that is larger than the largest text and i have related the
image to the subject of the storey i created for the project. I have also found that
a double page spread will also include a pull quote from the storey or in my case
interview. This is why i have included a pull quote from the interview i used for
my double page spread and of course i related it to my audience by making sure
it was a subject that would intrigue a younger more impressionable audience.
Another conventional aspect to pop magazines double page spreads and all
double page spreads is a relating storey. This is why i have included a storey that
will intrigue the audience i am aiming for.
