SOLID WOOD FLOORING
Solid wood flooring is milled from a
solid piece of lumber and shaped to
impart the tongue and groove to the
edges and/or ends.
Solid wood flooring is made in
thicknesses of 3/4 inches or 5/16 inches
.
ENGINEERED WOOD FLOORING
Assembled into panels (like plywood)
with 310 layers of wood veneer with
the grain of adjacent plies perpendicular.
Engineered wood flooring ranges from
1/4 inch to 3/4 inch thick, and the top
(i.e.,wear) layer ranges from 1/16 inch to
1/6 inch thick.
Due to its multi-ply
construction,engineered wood flooring is
more stable than solid wood flooring .

ENGINEERED WOOD

Engineered wood is real wood, but instead of one solid piece it consists of three to
10 thin layers of wood, called plies, that are assembled and glued in a cross-ply
construction.
The top layer of wood can range from 0.6mm to 6mm thickness.
Overall board thickness ranges from 10mm to 21mm.
Engineered wood is much more stable than solid wood and is less susceptible to
shrinking and expanding with changes in temperatures and humidity.

STYLES OF WOOD FLOORING

Strip Flooring
It is made entirely of solid pieces of wood,
generally " in thickness and 2 " to 3 " in
width.
Each individual board is machined with a tongue
on one side and one end, and a groove on the
opposite end and side. All boards are nailed
down, one at a time, taking care to offset the
end joints to create a pleasing pattern.
Random Plank
Any wood flooring material 3" wide or more
is termed "plank flooring." Plank flooring is
available in both square edge and bevel
edge (V groove).
Parquet
Small pieces arranged in different designs
Pre-finished squares for easy installation
Herringbone
It is an elegant, upscale flooring style, most
often found in museums and high end homes.
This effect is generated by installing flooring
pieces of equal length, usually between 9 to 24
inches, at a 90 degree angle respectively, with
the ends cut at 90 degrees.
A chevron pattern is basically the same but
with a 45 degree cut corner where the boards
meet at a square angle.

INSTALLATION SYSTEMS
Tongue-and-groove: Tongue-
and-groove flooring can be
installed by
glue-down (both engineered
and solid),
floating (mostly engineered
only),
nail-down (not recommended
CLICK"
"for SYSTEMS: A "click" floor is similar to tongue-and-groove, but
most engineered).
instead of fitting directly into the groove, the board must be angled or
"tapped" in to make the curved or barbed tongue fit into the modified
groove.
Floor connection
system: The general
principle is to have
grooves on all four
sides of the plank with
a separate,
unconnected, piece
that is inserted into
the grooves of two
planks to join them.

Glue Down
Wood flooring can also be glued-
down.
A layer of plastic is placed onto the
sub-floor . The wood pieces are then
laid on top of the glue and hammered
into place using a rubber mallet and
nail.
FINISHING, REFINISHING, AND SANDING
Floor finishes
The two most popular modern finishes for wood flooring are :
Oil
Polyurethane

Oil - Oil finished floors are made from naturally derived drying oils, and are
not to be confused with petroleum based oils.

Polyurethane- The two most common are straight polyurethane and oil-
modified polyurethane.
Both products are sold under various names including: urethane, lacquer,
and varnish.

Sanding
Sanding provides a method for smoothing an installed floor, compensating
for unevenness of the subfloor.
Additionally, sanding is used to renew the appearance of older floors.
1. Oil-modified urethane -
Most common surface finish
Easy to apply
Dries in about eight hours.
2. Moisture-cured urethane -
More durable
More moisture resistant than other surface finishes.
Non-yellowing
These finishes are extremely difficult to apply, have a strong odour
3. Water-based urethane -
Finishes are clear and non-yellowing
Dry in about two to three hours.
Water-based urethanes are generally more expensive.
4. Penetrating Sealers -
This type of finish often have a colour and can be used to stain and seal the wood
floor.
5. Paste Wax-
Wax is the easiest to apply,
Least expensive,
Fastest drying,
Easiest to repair, and
With proper care will survive forever.

How to fix
Fixing into a screed:
The sub-floor should be firm, clean and dry. The recommended
depth of screed
is at least 35mm for 20mm stone..
Make sure the stone is clean. Butter the back of the stone with an
adhesive
slurry before fixing the stone in the screed. In order to stop the
stone drying out
too quickly, which may result in some tiles not sticking properly,
we recommend
that the stone is wetted before fixing; alternatively paint the back
of the stone with
a bonding agent.
With any light coloured stone, white cement-based adhesive should
be used.
Using an adhesive:
The stone can be fixed to concrete screed or suspended wooden
floors.
Flexible additive should be used in the adhesive and grout with
suspended floors,
Under floor heating and externally.
Before fixing the tiles ensure that the sub-floor is true and level, free
from
contamination and loose areas and properly prepared to give a good
bond.
