Bain standards
Ampersand (&) Spell out; if company name has an ampersand, use the companys standard (e.g., Bain & Company
has a space vs. PG&E has no space)
Colon/semicolon Use two spaces after a colon; one space after semi-colons
Contractions Spell out contractions if space permits (dont = do not)
Hyphens Connect two unrelated phrases with a hyphen, $5-10M , 20-30%, 1-2B etc.
When writing a hyphenated word use a regular dash found on the keyboard with no spaces (value-added)
Use em-dash, e.g., Bain presentationsa poetic vision
Months Use only the first three letters of the month, no periods (Jan, Jun) unless space permits to spell it out
Nations Use periods when representing nations (U.S., U.K.)
Note and source Always singular regardless of how many notes and sources there are, two spaces after the colon
Numbers Spell out numbers one through ten within text, but not if they are percentages or dollar figures (1%, $9M)
Negative numbers are represented with dash (e.g., -$3M)
No space between the number and the letter representative ($10K, $24,000M, $5.6B)
Percents Spell out percent in text context unless there is a number beside it (2%)
Plurals For abbreviated plural use a lowercase s no apostrophe (CAGRs); use an apostrophe s when
abbreviation is possessive (ACs laptop)
Slashes (/) Spell out per in text context (days/month=days per month)
No space before or after slash
States No periods when abbreviating state names (CA, MD)
Versus Lower case letters followed by a period (vs.)

Widows Widows is when only one word is left on a line at the end of a text block; soft return (shift + enter) on
previous line if line from that text can bear it or has a short word which can join the widow
