Integrating Wind Turbine

Generators With Energy Storage

How Energy Storage And
Wind Energy Are Related
Energy Storage is the missing link between wind driven power
generation and delivering
power in a sustainable manner that can be dispatched at times of high
demand from the
grid.

The objective of energy storage is to offset this adverse effect of

fluctuating demand of electricity and to assure a steady output from
existing power plants. When the demand is lower than the capacity,
energy is stored. When the demand is higher than the capacity, the
stored energy is released. It is thus possible to supply electricity
reliably, efficiently and economically, meeting the peak electrical
demand on short notice.

Peaking load plant:

- Oil based pp.
- Natural gas pp.

What Is The Advantage?
Discharge of the stored enery during periods of peak load demand
would reduce or replace fuel-burning peaking plant capacity, thus
conserving fuel resources.

Use of energy storage to generate peaking power is termed ``peak

shaving.

Smoothing of the daily load curve leads to reduces stresses of load

following operation by the steam plant and consequently reduces
maintenance costs.

How Does CAES Work?
During off-peak hours, excess energy is used to compress air and store
it in reservoirs, aquifers or caverns. The stored energy is then released
during periods of peak demand by expansion of the air through an
turbine.

If the heat of compression is retained in the compressed air, this

process is called adiabatic storage and results in high storage efficiency.

If the heat of compression is allowed to dissipate, additional heat could

be added by burning fuel to retain the high storage efficiency . This is
called hybrid system.
Adiabatic Storage

- Stored green wind

energy remains green

- No product of
combustion

- Ideally benefits
renewable energy
systems such as
wind, solar and
biomass
Hybrid System

- The gas turbine delivers

approximately two thirds
more power with no
increase in fuel
consumption

- Air must be heated before

entering the turbine

Advantages of CAES
- Decrease in water consumption as wind power does not need it.
However, fossil plants demand in high quantities of water for cooling
purposes.

- CAES contributes to increasing the CO2 reduction contributed by wind

energy displacing fossil power generation. The CO2 reduction of
CAES/Wind integration is significant factor in the overall economics
considering the CO2 sequestration programs being promoted.

- CAES plant provides spinning reserve; a CAES plant with independent

compression/generation trains can bring the full generation capacity
online in less than 10 minutes.

- When located in an area where wind production is congesting the

local transmission lines the CAES plant has the potential to
significantly reduce or eliminate congestion and increase grid
efficiency by storing the wind energy and releasing it when the wind
plants are at a low output and more transmission line capacity is
available.
