The Language Arts
Traditionally defines as in primary teaching as listening,
speaking, reading and writing, but merely the tip of the
iceberg.
Included language conventions; spelling, punctuation,
grammar usage and handwriting and including newer
computer literacy skills.

Role and the purpose of Language Arts
in the primary ESL classroom
English language arts education incorporates the teaching and learning of reading, writing,
speaking, listening, and viewing.

Integration of language arts occurs in multiple ways; curriculum, instruction, and assessment
reflect the integration of listening, speaking, viewing, reading, and writing.

not perceived as individual content areas, but as one unified subject in which each of the five
areas supports the others and enhances thinking and learning.

there is integration of the teaching and learning of content and process within the curriculum.

literacy educators believe the knowledge, skills, and strategies of language arts are integrated
throughout the curriculum, enabling students to solve problems and think critically and
creatively in all subject areas.

- the vehicle of communication by which we live, work,
share, and build ideas and understandings of the
present, reflect on the past, and imagine the future.
Through language arts, we learn to appreciate, integrate,
and apply what is learned for real purposes in our
homes, schools, communities, and workplaces.

An effective language arts program should encompass process and
contenthow people communicate as well as what they
communicate.

Process includes skills and strategies used in listening, speaking,


reading, writing, and viewing.

Content includes the ideas, themes, issues, problems, and conflicts


found in classical and contemporary literature and other texts, such as
technical manuals, periodicals, speeches, and videos.

ensure all students are literate and can engage successfully in


reading, discovering, creating, and analysing spoken, written,
electronic, and visual texts which reflect multiple perspectives and
diverse communities and make connections within language arts and
between language arts and other fields.

Language Arts is more than just a subject. (Discuss)

Linguistic development
At the initial stage of the primary level, childrens use of
language become more mature and complicated
- Able to understand basic metaphors based on very
concrete ideas ; e.g hard as a rock
- Tailor their speech to the social situation
- Ability to understand language at a more complicated
level also develops
- Able to develop Illocutionary Intent (the ability to
understand that a sentence may have meaning beyond
the exacts words being spoken
- Children begin to understand words with multiple
meanings

Aesthetic development
The emergence of the ability to appreciate and critically
evaluate art pertain to any form of artistic expression
A reflection of the senses rather than artistic ability
Begin to recognize the importance patterns,
arrangements, proportion, use of light and colour and
even theme as they pertain to art as a form of
communication
Children with highly developed sense of aesthetics are
likely to develop a sense of aesthetics at early age due
to exposure within the home

With the aesthetics development, comes the
ability to interpret an environment
Begin to associate ugly places with things that
are bad, beautiful ones with good things
Can apply the terms to themselves based on the
surroundings
Can bring healthy or unhealthy effect on self-
esteem

How to encourage aesthetic development ?

Create activities that promote opportunities to freely


express childrens attitudes, feelings and ideas on arts

Create activities that are free from judgement and


competition

Conduct activities that stimulate awareness and interest

Moral values
A necessary part of the curriculum
Why moral values for the children ?
1. Preparing our children for future roles in society
2. Many parents arent teaching moral values
3. There is too much violence and dishonesty in society
4. To counter bad influence in society
5. Moral values will stick with you for life
