Energy Aware Runtime System to optimise trade off between energy available and
medical diagnostic utility
During Design time the MEDICAL
CLINICIANS define the diagnostic
value of different biomarker
algorithms while the SOFTWARE
DEVELOPERS identify the energy
profiles of the algorithms and their
variable configurations. This is defined
in a simple text file for the
RUNTIME to refer to.

The RUNTIME system predicts how much

energy is available for the next few minutes
based on the temperature, ambient light
and the activity of the wearer
It then runs the medical biomarker
algorithm and configuration that adds the
highest marginal utility to the overall
diagnosis thus maximising the benefits to
MEDICAL CLINICIANS for a given
energy harvested

Socio Economic Impact
Socio Medical
The project has significantly contributed to the medical community understanding of the human
brain and how brain rhythms and other biomarkers change as a function of ageing.
To record or process multi-parametric medical data simultaneously from any organ (foot, heart,
brain) over long periods in a comfortable manner, without power interruption or recharge,
Economic
The demonstrators of this project are extremely low-cost devices that can be manufactured as mass
consumer products, thus accessible to the elderly and young for medical monitoring.
Early warning of diseases thereby improving the immediacy and
Assist tuning and efficacy of treatment, and assessment of recovery, while all focusing in the
pharmacological intervention;
One spin off company has emerged and a Next Step project aims towards a second spin off.
Education
The intercourse of so many multidisciplinary PhD students as key research personnel in this project
has underpinned both the strong collaboration between the involved institutions, as well as a
deepening and broadening of the knowledge base of all involved across the multiple levels of
technology and medical science.
