What is strip footing?

Astrip footingis a continuous strip of

concrete under a continuous wall
carrying a uniformly distributed load.
Strip footingis also known as
continuous footing.
Uses of strip footing

Strip footings are commonly used for the

foundations to load-bearing walls.

They are also used when the pad

foundations for a number of columns in
line are so closely spaced that the
distance between the pads is
approximately equal to the length of the
side of the pads.

It is usually more economic and faster to

excavate and cast concrete in one long
strip, than as a series of closely spaced
isolated pads.

They are also used on weak ground to
increase the foundation bearing area, and
thus reduce the bearing pressure the
weaker the ground then the wider the strip.

Footing spread (150mm on each side) is

usually provided:
i) To facilitate bricklayer a working space for
building the lower courses of walls.
ii) To provide stability to the load-bearing
walls before it is tie down by floors and
roof.
iii) To provide working space for the hand
excavation operation in deeper trench
excavation.

Wide strip footing
Use in a situation where the load
bearing capacity of the soil is low
(e.g. soft clay silt).
Inverted T beam strip
footing
Use in a situation where is a danger
of the foundation failing as a beam in
the longitudinal direction.
Deep strip footing
A narrow footing which is used for
normal soil and normal loads and is
made 0.9m deep.
Stepped strip footing

Used on a sloping site where the

steps allow the foundation to follow
the slope without too much
excavation, when compared with
excavations and retaining walls.
Characteristics of strip
footing

The key sizes of a strip foundation for concrete

cavity wall construction and timber frame cavity
wall construction are similar.

The size and position of the strip is directly

related to the overall width of the wall.

The principle design features of a strip

foundation are based on the fact that the load is
transmitted at 45 degrees from the base of the
wall to the soil.

The depth of a strip foundation must be equal to

or greater than the overall width of the wall.

The width of the foundation must be three times

the width of the supported wall.
How to build strip footing?

It is vital that the strip foundation is strengthened

through the inclusion of steel reinforcement.

A compacted hardcore base of minimum 150mm

is installed to form a platform for the subfloor
and the subsequent loads of the dwelling.

The 150mm concrete subfloor is poured on the

hardcore in order to provide a strong, smooth
platform for the insulation.

A radon barrier is installed to form a continuous

seal on the entire footprint of the house.

A Damp Proof Course is installed in order to repel
any rising moisture. It is vital that the DPC is
carried up into the blockwork to form a water
tight seal over the entire floor area.

The DPC must run through the blockwork at a

minimum of 150mm above finished ground level.

100mm of rigid insulation is installed below the

finished floor to ensure that there is no heat lost
through the foundation.

75mm concrete screed then provides the

finished floor.
