Traction
Action of drawing some thing over a
surface
Or the system which uses electric

power for traction is called electric

traction

Types of traction
Non electrical traction 1)
steam engine drive 2) internal
combustion-engine drive

Electrical traction
1) self contained vehicles
2) vehicles which receive electric
power

Advantages of using dc series
motors
I. High Starting torque
II. Low maintenance cost
III. High rate of acceleration & retardation
IV. Easy speed control
Disadvantage
V. Only one disadvantage is the necessity of
locating ac/dc conversion substations at
short distance apart.

submitted by vishwas
Advantage of 25 KV AC Traction over
1500 V DC Traction
Reduced requirement of copper, steel for

supports and cement because foundations

are lighter.
Increased substation spacing - 50 to 80

kms as compared to 8 to 10 kms for DC

traction.
There is direct application of industrial

frequency.

Neutral Section
A short section of insulated dead
over-head equipment which
separates the sectors fed by two
adjacent substations which are
normally connected to different
phases.

DROPPERS & BONDS
DROPPERS
A fitting used in overhead equipment
construction for supporting contact wire from
catenary
BONDS
An electrical connection across a joint in or
between adjacent lengths of rail
(structure bond, continuity bond, cross bond
etc.)

Power supplies used
Modern microprocessor technology and the
availability of efficient and compact power
components have changed that picture. In
3-phase AC locos, the input (single-phase
AC) from the OHE is rectified and then 3-
phase AC is generated from it, whose
voltage, phase, and frequency can be
manipulated widely, without regard to the
voltage, phase, frequency of the input
power from the OHE
