Course Synopsis
This course imparts the knowledge of the
physical and mechanical properties of
materials needed for the design of process
engineering equipment.
Topics covered include theories of structure
of materials (solids i.e. ferrous alloy or
non- ferrous alloy), mechanical properties
analysis such as stress and strain, theory
of failure, finally the mechanical design
of pressure vessel and support for
chemical process equipment's.

FACULTY OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING,

FKK, UiTM SHAH ALAM, 2015
Course Outcomes (COs)
CO1-Performes engineering calculations
related to mechanical properties of materials
such as forces, stresses and strains and their
interrelations in various mechanical structures
in different orientation and conditions.
CO2- Identify the structure of various types of
engineering materials, explain the methods to
determine their properties and apply the
knowledge of materials selection for
construction of process equipment

CO3-Apply the knowledge of engineering

materials to mechanical design of process

Class Attendance Policy
Each student is compulsory (100%) to attend
all classes including lectures AND tutorials.
If students do not attend 20% of the classes
and do not give prior notification to the
lecturer of reasons for absence and intent to
attend the class, the student shall be bar from
the final exam.
Lecturer of courses are not obligated to
provide make-up opportunities for students
who are absent, unless the absence has been
officially approved. An officially approved
absence, however, merely gives the individual
who missed the class an opportunity to make
up the work and in no way excuses him from
the work.
Academic Dishonesty
Statement on Academic Dishonesty:
Cheating on exams and plagiarism in the
preparation of homework will be considered
unacceptable conduct. Academic sanctions will
be taken against all parties involved in the act
of cheating and/or plagiarism. A student
participating in the act of cheating and/or
plagiarism will receive a failing grade in this
class.
The following illustrates major four forms of
academic dishonesty:
1. Plagiarism, e.g. the submission of work that is
not one's own or for which other credit has
been obtained.
2. The altering or falsification of data.
3. Improper collaboration in group work.
Chapter1: Learning
Outcomes
Identify types of forces and stress
Definition of average normal,
shear and allowable stress
Classification of forces
What is force?
It is an action of 1 body to another.
Exist in equal magnitude, opposite
directionType
pairs
of force Definition

External All force acting on FBD

W(linear distributed load) Applied force/load

(dimension of force/length)
Concentrated/distributed
Concentrated , F Area of the contact is small
compared to the size of body
(act at a point)
Reaction Supporting forces

Static load (dead weight) Do not vary with time,

pressure/temperature
Repeat load Load that applied/remove many
thousand time
Impact load Transfer large amount energy in
short time
Internal
forces
In mechanical analysis problem, is to be able
to determine the resultant force and moment
acting within a body, which are necessary to
hold the body together when the body is
subjected to external loads

Normal force, N
Shear force, V
Torsional moment, T
Bending moment, M
4 types of Resultant
Loadings
Normal Force, N: Acts
perpendicular to the area. E.g Tension

Shear Force, V: lies in the plane of the area

and is developed when external loads tend
to cause 2 segments to slide over one
another.

Torsional Moment or Torque, T: is

developed when the external loads tend to
twist one segment with respect to the other.

Bending Moment, M: caused by the loads

that tend to bend the body about an axis
Type of connection and reaction
Equilibrium of rigid
body
Equilibrium of rigid body-body
which is not deform under
applied load.
3 dimension but always count on
2 dimension
Fy
F=0 (force)
M=0
(momentum)

Fx
Example Problem 1-Force &
Reaction Q: The rigid structure shown is subjected
to a 5000lb force P. The connection at
joints A,B, and C are frictionless pin.
Determine the force A and B on AB.
How many unknown ?
For moment choose the right side
Point A was selected for the moment
equation.
Fx=0 +

Fy=0 +

M=0 +(Anti clockwise)

Procedure of analysis
Decide which segment to be
considered.
Determine the reaction acting on
the chosen segment.
Draw FBD of entire body
Apply necessary equation of
equilibrium
Procedure of analysis
(cont)
FBD
- Keep all external distributed load,
moments, torques and forces acting on
the body in their exact locations,
- Section is often taken perpendicular to
the longitudinal axis of the member.
- Draw FBD, of cut segment and
indicate unknown resultant normal force
(N), shear force (V), bending moment
(M), and torsional moment (T) at the
section.
Procedure of analysis
(cont)
FBD
-at coplanar system of forces, only N,
V and M act at centroid
Equation of equilibrium
-Moment should be summed at the
section. Doing this eliminates the
unknown forces N and V and allow
direct solution for M.
-If its negative, mean that its
opposite the directional shown in FBD

that can move along a beam. The
beam is supported by a pin at A and
roller at B.
a)Neglect the mass of the beam and
determine the reaction at A & B
b)If the mass of the beam is 8.5 kg/m,
determine the reaction at A and B
Example Problem 3- Force &
Reaction

a) Determine the support reaction

b) The internal force system on a
section 6 ft to the right of a support
at A.
Example Problem 4- Force &
Reaction

The cantilever beam is subjected to both concentrated

and distributed loads. Determine:-

b) The internal forces on a section 4 m to the right of
the support at A
