Workshop Safety
(Chapter1)

Instructor: Eng. Ahmed Mousa

First Semester, 2014/2015
General Safety
Workplace safety is about preventing injury and
illness to employees , damages of machines
and tools , and damages of the materials .
To achieve the safety we should apply the
safety procedures and safety rolls.
Safety is a procedure and rolls which we apply
to prevent injury and illness to employees ,
damages of machines and materials .

2
General requirements of safety in
workshop
Keep the workshop clean at all times .
Always seek instructions before using
an unfamiliar piece of equipment .
Only use tools and machines for their
intended purpose .
Report all damaged equipment and do
not use it until it has been repaired .
Where machine guards are provide they
must be kept in place .

3
General requirements of safety in
workshop
Never distract the attention of another
staff member when that person is
operating equipment.
Always use the appropriate personal
protective device .
Long hair needs to be restrained .
Tie , ring , chine and hand watch should
not placed at the workshop .
Report all hazards and unsafe
conditions .
4
Bench work and hand tools

Keep the floor area around the bench clean .

Always ensure that tools has properly fitted
hands .
Do not use tools which appear to be
damaged .
Always use the proper tool .
Do not use tools unless you know how to
use it .
(Ask if you dont know )

5
Human Safety

Clothing :
Wear overalls in the workshops it should
has good fitting with no loose belts .
Remove ties , scarves , rings , watches ,
bracelets necklaces ..etc .
Wear safety shoes or strong leather type
shoes in the workshop .
Wear eye protection when operating the
machine or process that produces flying
particles .

6
Human Safety
Skin care :
Wear gloves when handling dirty or
sharp materials .

7
Human Safety
Training :
The stuff should know how to operate
the machine and should know how to
use the emergency stops of any
machine before to start the machine .

8
Human Safety
What is emergency stop switch?
emergency stopore-stop, is asafetymechanism
used to shut off a device in an emergency situation
in which it cannot be shut down in the usual
manner.

9
Human Safety
How Do Emergency Stop Buttons
Work?

10
Human Safety
Lighting and ventilation :
The good workplace that has good lighting
and good ventilation .

Guards :
Ensure that the machine has the
protective guards for hands ,fingers
,arms.etc

11
Machine safety

Machinery Installation :
Machinery , plant and equipment
should be installed so as to ensure it
has sufficient space and safe
footholds are provided around an
individual machine to allow for
normal operation , adjustment and
ordinary repairs .

12
Machine safety

Machine Controls :
Machine controls should be in accordance with
the following requirements:
Start-stop controls of the push button easily
visible .
Start buttons that to be colored in green and
the word start is written .
Stop buttons shall be long, easy to locate , and
colored in red with the word STOP .
Emergency stop buttons that stops the
machine should be easily to reach at any time.
13
Machine safety

Machine Guards :
Machine guards to keep the operators body
fingers , clothing and arms away from the
danger point without impeding the operation
or obstructing vision .

Maintenance :
A program of regular maintenance should be
apply to all machines .
Daily , monthly and after every operation
cleaning , lubrication and adjustment .

14
Material Safety
Electrical :
Electrical shock circuit may cause material damage or
fire , The electrical power should be protected .

Explosion :
Patrols , kerosene , alcohol , esters ect. , are prohibited
for use in workshop even the empty cans should not to
be in the workshop.

Fire Prevention :
Smoking is not permitted in the workshops , the fire
fighting equipment must be located in visible place and
easy to reach .

15
Workplace warning signs and
symbols
The following table gives a brief
overview of signs and symbols you
may encounter during the workshops

16
Examples of Signs and
Symbol

17
Types of guards
Permanently fixed barriers (guards):
Permanently fixed barriers are permanently fixed physical
barriers that are welded or incorporated into the body of
the machine for cases in which, during normal operation,
maintenance or cleaning, no person would need complete
or partial access to the dangerous area.

18
Examples of guards

19
Types of guards
Interlocked physical barriers
(interlocked guards):
interlocked guards: also known as movable
guards and are interconnected with the
power or control system of the machine.
The interlock prevents the machinery from
operating unless the guard is closed. They
cannot be opened until the dangerous
parts of the machine have come fully to
rest.
20
Types of guards

Yellow = guarding. Red = emergency stop button.

21
Types of guards
Presence-sensing systems:
Laser or Light guards: which are photoelectric safety
systems that detect an obstruction in the path taken
by a beam or beams of light.
If the field of light is broken, the machine stops and
will not cycle.
The invisible barrier operated by this system may
consist of a single beam, multiple of beams of light, a
curtain of light or any combination of these necessary
to provide the required safeguard. This device should
be used only on machines that can be stopped before
the worker can reach the danger area.

22
Types of guards

23
Types of guards
Two handed controls:
Two-handed control devices force the operator to use
both hands to operate the machine controls.
However, they only provide protection for the operator
and are usually easy to defeat. They do not provide
protection for anyone else who may be near the
danger point.
Two-handed controls should only be used in conjunction
with other guarding types and not on their own.
Guards installed must be arranged to protect all people,
as far as practicable.

Types of guards
Illustrated below is an example where
a combination of guarding and safety
devices has been used.

26
First aid
Any person working within the
engineering workshops to be aware of
how to work first aid to reduce the risk
of injury when they occur to any
person within the workshop.
