Classified US satellite launched from California

A rocket carrying a classified US satellite for the National Reconnaissance


Office has been launched from California.
The Atlas 5 rocket lifted off at 9:49 am today and roared away into a clear
sky over Vandenberg Air Force Base.
All systems were going well when the launch webcast concluded about five
minutes into the flight, as is customary during such missions.
The satellite dubbed NROL-79 is described only as a national security
payload for the NRO.
The once-secret office operates an array of intelligence-gathering
satellites.

White House staff told to preserve Russia-related materials

White House lawyers have instructed the president's aides to


preserve materials that could be connected to Russian interference
in the 2016 election and other related investigations, three
administration officials said.

The memo, which was sent to White House staff on Tuesday,


comes after Senate Democrats last week asked the White House
and law enforcement agencies to keep all materials involving
contacts that Trump's administration, campaign and transition team
or anyone acting on their behalf have had with Russian
government officials or their associates.

Democrat urges US Attorney Gen to combat rising hate crimes

In the wake of the killing of an Indian techie in Kansas, Indian-American Democrat Raja
Krishnamoorthi has urged US Attorney General to "use the full powers" of the Justice Department
to "combat the rising tide" of hate and violence in the US. "From grave desecration at a Jewish
cemetery in St Louis to a shooting at a bar in Kansas, Americans have been shaken to the core by
the recent rise in hate crimes," Krishnamoorthi said in a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32, was killed and Alok Madasani, another Indian of the same age, injured
in the shooting by navy veteran Adam Purinton, who yelled "terrorist" and "get out of my country"
before opening fire on them.
Jewish Community Centres nationwide have received bomb threats, and countless Muslims have
been harassed and threatened, the democrat said.

Canada university evacuated over anti-Muslim bomb threat

A bomb threat targeting Muslim students forced an evacuation


of nearly 4,000 students from the downtown campus of
Concordia University in Montreal.
In an email to school administrators and local media, a group
identifying itself as the "underground" chapter of C4, or the
Council of Conservative Citizens of Canada, at the university
directly warned "Muslim students" there it would detonate one
homemade explosive a day through Friday to protest their
activities.
Now that President (Donald) Trump is in office south
of the border, things have changed. We will not
tolerate your behaviour anymore," the group said in
its emailed letter, referring to the US president.

Jaishankar meets US NSA, discuss bilateral
ties

Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar has met US National Security Advisor Lt


Gen H R McMaster and discussed counter-terrorism, bilateral relations and
ways to take Indo-US ties forward.
The meeting between Jaishankar and McMaster gains significance as the
top military leader was appointed as the National Security Advisor by US
President Donald Trump ten days ago.
During the meeting held at the White House, the two officials are believed
to have discussed issues related to security relationship, counter-terrorism,
and defence partnership.
Jaishankar also met Speaker of the House of Representatives Paul Ryan
and discussed various issues, including ways to enhance economic and
defence cooperation between both countries.
