The process of setting a clear


direction is one of the prime
functions of leadership.

Strategic visionary leadership


implies that the leader is able to
develop a long-range vision of what
his organization should become while
at the same time creating a pathway

Communication is therefore a
key element.

Clear direction and effective
communication are essential
for alignment of the workforce.

Well-organized management of the process
by:

1. Clarifying the vision, mission and value.



2. Open communication and feedback.

3. Straight-forward and effective
coordination.

4. Endless patience.
10.2 ENHANCING COMMITMENT
Highly committed employees have the
following characteristics:

1. Care about corporate goals and objective.

2. Are eager to offer creative ideas on how to


improve systems and the quality of goods and
services.

3. Are less likely to quit their jobs.

4. Are happy in their work.


10.3 THREE PILLARS FOR
BUILDING COMMITMENT

According to A. D'Souza, there are


three major pillars for building
commitment in the workplace:

1. A sense of belonging
2. A sense of enthusiasm
3. Confidence in leadership

BUILDING COMMITMENT
To create enthusiasm and commitment in
others, you must show that you have it
yourself.

The leader must also demonstrate


consistency of focus, an ability to
maintain the organization's direction in
spite of obstacles from less committed
peers.

Creating commitment in others requires


more than a leader's inner strength o
personal power of persuasion.

According to Anthony D'Souza


(1993), in order to gain the
commitment of your people, the
following guidelines should be
taken in consideration:
1. Communicate candidly
2. Empower your people
3. Develop your people both
professionally and personally
4. Lead with honesty, integrity and
impartiality

Warren Bennis and Joan


Goldsmith (1993) highlight four
qualities of leadership that,
when practiced, engender trust
and commitment. They are
vision, empathy,
consistency, and integrity.

1. A sense of belonging occurs


when leaders and managers:
Inform;
Involve;
Share success.
2. A sense of excitement in the
job depends on:
Work that is meaningful and
provides opportunities for
growth;
