MOTOR CYCLE LANE

PROPOSAL
Brgy.San Pablo to Brgy.Valencia Highway
INTRODUCTION

Roads are considered to play vital role in trade

and industry. Developed in early-European
civilization, roads are used to transport goods,
provide access, and encourage farmers, producer,
and consumers, alike, to have economic interaction.
Roads are the key to the development of an
economy. A good road network constitutes the basic
infrastructure that accelerates the development
process through connectivity and opening up of the
backward regions to trade and investment.
Motorcycles are the main mode of transportation in
several developing Asian countries. The basic
difference in the movement of a car and that of a
motorcycle relates to lane-based and non-lane-based
movements, respectively. A car runs in and seldom
changes lanes. However, a motorcycle frequently
changes direction, especially under congested
conditions. Some Asian countries are facing up
problems in road safety because of the increasing of
motorcycle. Aside from its beneficial function for
accessibility, motorcycle has particular issues within
road safety framework. As the road safety issues in
latest year are concerning serious .
Motorcycle lane has proved to be an effective
engineering measure in reducing motorcycle
crashes and fatalities. Its effectiveness stems from
the fact that it helps mitigate the hazards of riding a
motorcycle in a traffic stream, which have become a
serious cause of death and injury in many countries.
This research seeks to develop standardized widths
and construction of motor lane for motorcycle lanes
in Ormoc City. The optimum format for such a lane
may be determined from the simulation of data
relating to road accidents, traffic volumes and
vehicle speeds.
OBJECTIVES

To determine the Annual Daily Traffic Volume in

the said location.
To identify if what type of vehicle mostly pass the
location.
To be able to know if motorcycle lane is a good
proposal to reduce traffic flow.
To ensure that the passenger can reach their
destination safely.
To lessen the rate of accidents and promote
safety travel.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

What is the average annual daily traffic

volume in Brgy. San Pablo to Brgy.Valencia?
What are the possible solutions to address
the traffic problems in this area?
How effective is the motor lane cycle in
reducing motorcycle accidents and
minimizing traffic flow during peak hours?
Is Brgy.San Pablo to Valencia a congested
road?
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Separates motorcyclists from interaction

and potential conflict with larger, heavier
vehicles.
Reduced vehicle to motorcycle crashes.
Can improve traffic flow if well designed.
Riders dont wait for stopped cars, and in
return, they dont make the cars wait for
them.
SCOPE & LIMITATION
Scope
The research aims to provide an insight of the
total condition of the roads in Ormoc City, by
studying the conditions present along Brgy. San
Pablo to Brgy. Valencia National Highway. To help
the local government offices in-charge for the
urbanization of Ormoc City. This study envisions
that Ormoc City will soon become a highly-
urbanized city-center. This study aims deliberation
between stakeholders, agencies and LGU in Ormoc
City to address the rising demand for adequate
roads infrastructure and different land uses.
Limitation

The issues on the right-of-way that may be found

herein will be left subjected to the action of the
corresponding government offices concerned.
Nevertheless, the research has intended to identify
the need of city roads to meet up market
sustainability and social convenience.

PRESENTATION OF THE PROPOSAL

Engineering Intervention
The Brgy. San Pablo to Valencia Highway (lane in
orange and sky blue) is not a congested area
according to Google earth. Its traffic flow is slow
every day. But according to the data we gathered
there are numerous numbers of motorcycles who
pass this road. To cater the rising volume of
motorists movement along this street and to be
able to establish, finally, we propose for a motor
lane road.

Engineering interventions involves creation of

physical projects and systems that shall ensure fast,
efficient and developmental traffic structure for the
city, which from this study involves.
Construction of New Transportation
Infrastructures to meet up the demand: Creation of
motorcycle lane.

A motorcycles narrow width can allow it to pass

between lanes of stopped or slow-moving cars on
roadways where the lanes are wide enough to offer an
adequate gap. This option can provide an escape route
for motorcyclists who would otherwise be trapped or
struck from behind. Traveling between lanes of stopped
or slow-moving cars (i.e., lane splitting) on multiple-lane
roads (such as interstate highways) slightly reduces
crash frequency compared with staying within the lane
and moving with other traffic. It appears to be worthy of
further study because it offers a means of reducing
congestion in addition to possible safety benefits. It is
widely used in many other countries.
Motorcycle, as used throughout this position
statement, refers to a two-wheeled, single-track
registered motor vehicle, which requires a
motorcycle license or an operators license with
motorcycle endorsement to operate legally on
public roadways. Motorized bicycles, mopeds,
motorcycles equipped with a sidecar, three-wheeled
motorcycles.
CONSIDERATION FOR THE DESIGN
Unless they are well designed, motorcycle lanes can
increase motorcycle to motorcycle crashes.
Motorcycle lanes should be at least 1.8 meters wide (for
each direction).
Motorcycle lanes should be at least 3.6 meters wide if
overtaking is permitted.
Horizontal and vertical alignment must be suitable for
speeds at which motorcycles will be traveling on the lane.
Off-ramps must be designed so that motorcyclists exiting
the lane are not at risk of being hit from behind by other
motorcyclists.
Crash barrier support posts facing the lane are a hazard
and must be protected.
Centre line marking should be provided in lanes that are
wider than 3.5 metres.
The surface of motorcycle lanes must be properly
maintained. Because motorcycles have only two points of
contact with the road, slippery or rough road surfaces are a
crash risk.
Motorcycle LANE
Politico-administrative, which involves the
jurisdiction of the City Administrative Offices.

Enforcement of traffic laws and ordinances

ensuring the fluent and uninterrupted city roads to
cater the rising demand for movement.
Proper Gear such as helmets, gloves, pants and
shoes.
Enforcers will also flag down those without side
mirrors and signal lights.
Excess in passenger is not allowed.
Registration of the vehicles.
