The mission of the Georgia Cyber Academy is to provide an

exemplary educational experience to students in a unique and
individualized setting.
Moment of Reflection
Georgia Cyber Academy
encourages, at the start
of each day, all students,
teachers, and
administrators to
engage in a brief period
of quiet reflection for
one minute.The
moment of quiet
reflection is not
intended to be and shall
not be conducted as a
religious service or
exercise, but shall be
considered an
opportunity for a
moment of silent
reflection on the
anticipated activities of

What will be learning and working
on this week?
Georgia Standards
S5CS1. Students will be aware of the importance of curiosity,
honesty, openness, and skepticism in science and will exhibit
these traits in their own efforts to understand how the world
works.
a.
Keep records of investigations and observations and do not
alter the records later.
b.
Carefully distinguish observations from ideas and speculation
about those
observations.
c.
Offer reasons for findings and consider reasons suggested by
others.

d. Take responsibility for understanding the importance of

being safety conscious
Unit One: Scientific Inquiry
1. What are the steps of the scientific method?

2. Why do scientists follow these steps?

Write these in your science journal. We will discuss the answers at the end of
the lesson.
Have you ever wondered why
something happens?
What makes me
burp?
Why is that dog Why is that
barking? glow stick
What glowing?
makes pop
How does rock candy
the remote pop?
control my
TV?

That is what a scientific investigation is for!

What is Science?
What is Science?
Science is all about
improving our lives. Without
science we wouldn't have
very much, compared to
what we do have. No cars.
No exotic foods. No
television. No fancy clothes.
No internet!
We sometimes forget that
behind all the things we take
for granted every day is a
complex science that has
been in development for
years - and we even forget
that even to this day, there
are thousands of scientists
out there performing
experiments and researching
so that our lives in the future
can be made even easier.
What do Scientists do?
Well, scientists use their facilities to try and make new discoveries. They
might be trying to find a cure for an illness, or they might be trying to
make a car work by using less fuel. They do so much! And they all rely on
scientific method to ensure that all of their work goes to plan.

So scientific method is all about learning about the ways things work in
nature and science, and finding out new things which can help them with
their work. New knowledge is acquired when the scientists perform their
work.
Also, scientific method might involve a scientist looking back at something
they learned a long time ago - and thinking whether or not they got it
right! Scientific method often includes scientists trying to make their
understanding of the world even better than before - so scientific method
is a very complicated thing!
Lets watch together:
Steps of the scientific method
An easy way to remember:
Pizza- Problem (state the Problem)
Is- Information (collect Information)
Hot- Hypothesis (form a Hypothesis)
Especially- Experiment or procedure
Double- Data (collect, record and analyze Data)
Cheese- Conclusion (form a Conclusion)

Pizza is hot especially double cheese!

Vocabulary Preview:

Hypothesis: an idea or explanation that you then test

through study and experimentation. A hypothesis is more
than a wild guess, but less than a well-established theory.

Research: systematic investigation to establish facts, a

search for knowledge

Variable: any item, factor, or condition that can be

controlled or changed.

Conclusion: a final decision or judgment formed after

research and investigation
Scientific Method
Must be based on facts, not
opinions.
Make observations; not
just with your eyes!

Check for Understanding

A(n) _______________ is an educated

guess that can be tested and proven
wrong.

a. experiment
b. variable
c. hypothesis
Check for Understanding

The ___________________ is a step-by-step

process of investigating a problem or
question.

a. experiment
b. Scientific method
c. observation
Learning Target:
:
1. What are the steps of the scientific method that we
talked about today?
The steps are: state the problem, gather information, form a
hypothesis, conduct the experiment, record and analyze data,
draw a conclusion, but can be repeated as needed.
2. Why do scientists follow these steps?
The scientific method is a way to ask and answer scientific
questions by making observations and doing experiments.
Scientists use this method to modify theories or to discard them.
