Audience

Socio-Economic
Economic status is important when it comes to profiling an audience, this
allows to target specific groups that will most likely be drawn to the subject
at hand.
Economic activity is done by social science studies and it helps analyze
groups and their progress because of their local economy, an example of this
is someones class which is based on how much they own.
Psychographic
Studies values, personalities, opinions, attitudes, interests and lifestyles.
This research is also called IAO variables.
Its useful for marketing and opinion research, as they mostly get accurate
data.
Its done with demographics such as gender and age to get more detail.
Geodemographic
This is a technique to discover whether certain people go into groups by
doing comparisons of characteristics.
Retailers are a good example of this as in the local area aim business at all
ages.
Age
Make assumptions based on whether they are suited to the genre, this is
shown as people in their 40s might not like the same things as people do
who are teenagers.
Example of this is the inbetweeners as it mainly relates to the teenage
audience rather than the older audience who may be more interested in
Coronation Street or EastEnders.
Gender
Helps categories characteristics.
It helps as girls will not like some films that boys will not like and vice versa.
Shows also tend to aim at both genders to gain a bigger audience.
Shows like match of the day will be more suited to boys, but some girls will
still be interested in football and it has male presenters who were past
professionals. Whereas shows like Gossip girl is more suited to girls as they
can almost relate to them in ways.
Sexual Orientation
Refers to a persons preference as it helps the audience concept of a show.
They can relate to what they are being shown and therefore it will become
more successful.
Race or Ethnicity
This can also be used as it helps the audience find shows that they think will
suit them better.
Sometimes the audience will not just be english people as they may speak a
different language.
Mainstream & Niche
A much wider audience is usually referred to as the mainstream as they
have a much bigger audience that will watch their shows and be more
successful.
They can have a much wider target audience which can also be aimed at
various ages and genders.
Niche is a much smaller audience which also means a much smaller viewing,
the target audience will be mainly aimed towards one specific group.
Shows that are mainstream are shows like EastEnders whereas a Niche
audience would be something like Crazyhead on E4 which has a much
smaller audience.
