DEFINITIONS /
CONCEPTS
Project
A temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result.

A planned undertaking using resources (time, cost, manpower, machinery).

Temporary nature of project indicated the definite beginning and end of the
project

The end of project is reached when the project objective is achieved or

terminated when the objective cannot be met or need for the project no longer
exists.

Features
Definite beginning and end
Unique (Product or service is different in some distinguishing way)
Scope could be large, medium or small
Progressive elaboration (Integrates the concept of temporary & unique)
DEFINITIONS /
CONCEPTS
EXAMPLES OF PROJECT :

Developing a new product or service

Construction of built facility for a hospital

Creation of a road infrastructure

Development of a software for specific application.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES:

A component of the work performed during the course of a project.

Project activities are identified through a technique called W.B.S ( Work Break

Structure )

Project activities shall have time duration between the start and finish of the

activities called activity duration.

DEFINITIONS /
CONCEPTS
WHAT IS PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Project Management is the application of knowledge,

skills, tools and techniques to project activities to meet

the project requirements.

Project Management is accomplished through the

appropriate application and integration of 42 logically

grouped project management processes comprising of

5 project management process groups.

The Project Management
Knowledge Areas
A Balanced Project

Time
Triple Constraints Cost

Balancing the 3 sides to complete the project Quality

Ongoing effort to define and refine project
Combination of art and science

Scop
e
Scope: Sum of products and services to be provided as a project

Time: How long it takes to complete the project or to reach intermediate points or
milestones

Cost: Money, labor, equipment and other resources needed to complete the project
Exercise 1-1
PM Pitfalls and Pluses
Looking back on projects with which you
were associated, what were the factors (at
least three) that caused serious problems?

What were the factors that created a

perception of success?
Common Pitfalls

Unclear objectives
Lack of senior management support
Lack of effective project integration
Inadequate funding
Change in business priorities
Original assumptions invalid
Ineffective team
Lack of effective communication
processes
Other?
Factors Affecting Project
Success
Coordination and relations
Adequacy of structure and control
Project uniqueness, importance, and
public exposure
Competitive and budgetary pressure
Internal capabilities buildup
Project Phases and the
Project Life Cycles
PROJECT PHASES:

Project phases are divisions within a project and

are typically completed in a sequential manner.

Segmentation of a project into logical subsets

are termed as project phases.

Project phases are generally sequential and

sometimes overlapping.
Project Phases and the
Project Life Cycles
The number and naming of the

project phases depends upon:

project type (construction, software)

size and complexity

level of control

type of project delivery system

Project Phases and the
Project Life Cycles
Advantage of segmenting the project into

phases:

Enables better degree of monitoring and control

on the process within the phases

Inputs, outputs and results are from each of the

phases could be well defined and monitored

Phase wise allocation of cost and time enables

Project life Cycle :

A project life cycle is a collection of generally sequential and

sometimes overlapping / concurrent project phases

The name and number of phases in the project life cycle depends

upon

- Nature of Project

- Organizational characteristics involved in the project

- Management and control needs of a project

What is the project?

What is the purpose of the project?
What is the background to the project?
What are the specific project objectives?
What are the requirements of the project?
What (if any) are the major issues of the
project?
What are the deliverables of the project?
Who all will be involved in the project?
Who are the key stakeholders?
