Manufacturing
Manufacturing is defined as the
collection of physical and
intellectual activities.

Activities that are associated

with designing and making
tangible,movable items of value.

This can be done either by hand

or through the use of machinery.
It started developing as a technology since 1980.
A management philosophy.
CIM is the manufacturing approach of using
computers to control the entire production process.
CIM is the total integration of product design and
engineering , process planning and manufacturing by
means of complex computer system.
An example of the implementation of information and
communication technologies.
Major Elements of CIM System
Potential Benefits of CIM
Improved customer service
Shorter time to market with new products
Improved quality
Shorter flow time
Lower total cost
Lower total cost
Shorter customer lead time
Increased in manufacturing productivity
Reduce inventory level
Shorter vendor lead times
What is product life cycle?
The product life cycle is an important concept in marketing. It describes the stages
a product goes through from when it was first thought of until it finally is removed
from the market. Not all products reach this final stage. Some continue to grow and
others rise and fall.

What is the life cycle of a business

product?

The Product Life Cycle. A new product progresses through a sequence of stages
from introduction to growth, maturity, and decline. This sequence is known as the
product life cycle and is associated with changes in the marketing situation, thus
impacting the marketing strategy and the marketing mix.
Sequence of functions performed
in a manufacturing firm
1. Design assemblies and perform tolerance analysis on those assemblies.
2. Prepare engineering drawings of assemblies, individual parts, tooling,
fixtures and manufacturing facilities.
3. Create analytical models of parts for structural and thermal analysis.
4. Calculate weights, volume, center of gravity and thermal analysis.
5. Classify existing parts according to shape, function and the process by
which they are manufactured and retrieve these parts from the data
library on demand.
6. Prepare process parts lists.
7. Prepare process plants for individual part manufacture and assembly.

manufacturing firm

8.Prepare NC tools for manufacturing complete parts.

9.Program tools for bending and punching sheet metal parts.
10.Program the movement of robots in work cells.
11.Draw isometric sketches of parts and assemblies for use in process
planning sheet and technical manuals.
12.Prepare inspection programs, including programs for coordinate
measuring machine (CMMS)
13.Control the effect of parts design changes on assemblies and their
manufacture.
What is the manufacturing organization?
A Contract Manufacturing Organization (CMO), sometimes called a Contract
Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO), is
an organization that serves the pharmaceutical industry and provides
clients with comprehensive services from drug development
through manufacturing.

Business organization :
Business is an organization in which basic resources, called inputs, are
assembled and processed to provide goods or services, called outputs, to
customers.
Database Management System
(DBMS)
Collection of interrelated data
Set of programs to access the data
DBMS contains information about a particular enterprise
DBMS provides an environment that is both convenient and
efficient to use.

Database Applications:
Banking: all transactions
Airlines: reservations, schedules
Universities: registration, grades
Sales: customers, products, purchases
Manufacturing: production, inventory, orders, supply chain
Human resources: employee records, salaries, tax deductions

Databases touch all aspects of our lives

DATABASE STRUCTURE

1.Hierarchical
2.Network
3.Relational
Hierarchical database
Ahierarchical database
modelis adata modelin which
the data is organized into
atree-like structure. The data
is stored asrecordswhich are
connected to one another
throughlinks. A record is a
collection of fields, with each
field containing only one
value. Theentity typeof a
record defines which fields the
record contains.
Network model

Thenetwork modelis
adatabase modelconceived
as a flexible way of
representing objects and
their relationships.

There can be many many

relationship among data.
Relational database
Arelational databaseis a
digitaldatabasewhose organization is
based on therelational model of data
The various software systems used to
maintain relational databases are
known as arelational database
management system(RDBMS).
Virtually all relational database
systems useSQL(Structured Query
Language) as the language for
querying and maintaining the
database.
DESIRABLE FEATURES FOR A CIM
DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Data integration across heterogeneous computer systems.

Transaction processing.
Real-time interactions.
Distributed processing and data.
Multiple views of data.
Levels of security, data integrity.
Good user interface and knowledge-base support.
Materials management integration.
Quality assurance integration.
Configuration management.
FEATURES OF DISTRIBUTED
DATABASE SYSTEM
1. Location transparency

2. Performance transparency

3. Copy transparency

4. Transaction transparency

5. Fragment transparency

6. Scheme change transparency

Implementation of CIM
CIM is an integration process leading to
the integration of the manufacturing
enterprise

Dictated by the needs of the individual

enterprise this process usually starts
with the need to interchange
information between the some of the so
called islands of automation
Development of CIM
Guidelines for Successfully
Completing CIM Project
Define CIM to Top Management.

Make CIM a long term strategic project with strategic goal of the
firm.

Top management must sponsor the effort.

Plan from the top with comprehensive system to fit.

Implement from the bottom

Plan for integration and automation

CIM Implementation Block
Guidelines for Successfully
Completing CIM Project
Plan emphasis on projects that address labor, engineering and
management functions

Design engineering for parts is important for manufacturability.

Emphasize information flow.

Strive to pay as you go

Emphasize education for management and workforce

Communicate, communicate and communicate
