ation Goes for a Toss in Berham

Over 25 per cent of the citys population resorts to open defecation, which is
affecting its hygiene and sanitation.
As per a report of the Berhampur Municipal Corporation, 39.5 per cent of
households in the city do not have individual toilets.
Surprisingly, the number of households resorting to open defecation in the nonslum areas is not less either and is put at 10,096.
There are only 24 community toilets in the city and people not having access to
individual toilets are quite high. Out of these public toilets, 18 are managed by
Sulabh International and the rest by the BMC.
There is a public toilet on the Gram Devati Street. It is meant for 47 families of the
area who have been provided houses under IHSDP scheme.
The public toilet in the area has only three lavatories meant for women and three
for men. As these are not sufficient, most persons defecate in the open space near
the public toilet.

Why women haven't broken silence in Berhampur slums?
