HAZARD

IDENTIFICATION

Practical Approach

Everything starts with hazard identification

Hazard id is the starting point of risk assessment.

Unidentified hazards cant be managed

Hazard id requires co-operation

Practical Approach

A systematic way of seeing hazards

Needs to be carried out carefully & thoroughly, otherwise

all that follows is pointless

Essential part of the risk management process

Acts to change the way that people think

Creates hazard awareness

Identifying Hazards
Some hazards can be identified through experience,
knowledge and every person has an innate desire not to
come to harm.
This method of hazard I.D. should be verified asking
questions such as:

Can anybody be caught in or between objects

Do the tools present problems due to their weight, size, etc

Can machinery start automatically

Identifying Hazards

Is there the potential to slip & fall

Is there the potential to cause physical strain while

working

Is there exposure to extreme heat or cold

is excessive noise or vibration a problem

is there a danger of falling objects

is lighting a problem too much or too little

Identifying Hazards Cont.

do climatic conditions pose any possible problem

is harmful radiation a problem

are flammable substances present

can contact be made with hot, toxic, or caustic

substances

are there any dusts, fumes, gasses, or vapours in

the air.

What is a Hazard?
A condition or practice that has the
potential to injure or harm an individual,
cause damage, an environmental impact
and/or process loss e.g.

Examples of Hazards
CONDITIONS

PRACTICES

Missing handrail

Careless driving

No Windrow

Alcohol Abuse

No Brakes on Vehicle

Taking Short Cuts

No fire fighting equipment

Deviation from procedure

Defective power tool

Horseplay

No bund wall

Washing chemicals into drains

HAZARD

The employer has a duty to:

Reduce
Eliminate
Control
Hazards in the Workplace

INCIDENT

An event which may result in:

Injury
Damage to property
Harm to the health of a person
Interrupt normal activity

ACCIDENT
An unplanned event which results in:

Injury
Damage to property
Harm to the health of a person
Interrupts normal activity

The Work Environment

The work environment may include:

The building structures and all plant

The work process, including what is done and how

Work arrangements, including the effects of shift work and

overtime arrangements

The Work Environment

The work environment Cont.:

The physical environment, including temperature,

weather conditions, lighting, ventilation, dust, heat,
noise, vibration

The psychological environment, including overcrowding,

speed of process & other stresses

Safe Plant & Substances

Plant means machinery, equipment, appliances and all

tools. Plant may include:

cranes, forklifts, vehicles, computers, electrical tools,

hand held tools, ladders, etc.

Safe Plant & Substances

Substances means any natural or artificial substance

which may be a solid, liquid, gas or vapour.
Substances may include:

chemicals, welding gases, cleaning products, etc.

Protective Clothing & Equipment

Where hazards cannot be avoided the company is
required to protect employees by providing them with
adequate personal protective
equipment & clothing.

Benefits of Hazard Identification

By identifying the hazards and putting appropriate

control measures in place we:

reduce incidents
reduce losses
improve productivity
improve profits
accept our moral obligation to each other

How are Hazards Introduced?

Hazards can generally be categorised into 4 types:

Machine hazards
~ noise, vibration, moving parts
Environmental hazards
~ noise, heat, temperature, dust

How are Hazards Introduced?

Material hazards
~ chemicals, flammable, explosive
People hazards
~ under skilled, fatigued, physical constraints
These can also however be described in terms of
energy

One Minute Risk Assessment

Risk means the likelihood that an injury or harm
can come to an employee.
Each employee must at all times strive to eliminate
the potential of an incident/accident by conducting
