Plenary: Identify Place Value in 7-digit numbers

Do you think the number of people in our city would

be in 100s, 1000s, 10,000s, 100,000s or millions?
What about the number of leaves on a tree?
Make a list of items that might be measured in
millions. In a few minutes we will share our ideas.

04.01.16
Warm Up: Count on and back in 10s, 100s, 1000s and
10000s from 5-digit numbers

Input 45,378 on your calculators

Add 10 to your number five times 45,428
Subtract 100, five times 44,928
Add 1000, five times 49,928
Add 10,000 five times 99,928

LI: Add and subtract 1, 10, 100, 1000, 10000, 100000 and
1000000 to/from 7-digit numbers

Lets place the number 5,555,555

into a calculator.
Well add 1 and see which digit
changes
Which digit will change if we add
10 repeatedly?
What happens if we subtract 1
from 2,000,010 when we get
to 2,000,000 what comes next?

04.01.16
LI: Add and subtract 1, 10, 100, 1000, 10000, 100000 and
1000000 to/from 7-digit numbers
Lets play a game
Demo- two players please
Generate a number using 7 of your number cards
Youll now roll a dice
1 subtract 10
2 subtract 100
3 subtract 1000
4 subtract 10,000
5 subtract 100,000

You must
write out all
of your
workings as
you go
along!

6 subtract 1,000,000
Aim of the game is to get as close to 1,000,000 as possible without going below

04.01.16
Plenary: Add and subtract 1, 10, 100, 1000, 10000,
100000 and 1000000 to/from 7-digit numbers

Im thinking of a number, I add 10, I get

7,237,843. What number was I thinking of?
Im thinking of a number, I add 1000, I get
9,945,678. What number was I thinking of?
Have a go yourself write one of these for
your partner to solve.

100,000 or 1,000,000

Write on your number line, any four numbers that would go

between the intervals.

Record whether they would round to 2 or 3,000,000

Ext: Round your four numbers to the nearest 100,000

05.01.16
Plenary: Order and round 7 digit numbers to the nearest
10,000, 100,000 or 1,000,000

On your own and on your whiteboard:

Write a number between 4,000,000 and 5,000,000

With your table, place your numbers in ascending order.

WALT: Calculate rises and falls in temperature including
negative numbers

At what temperature does water start to

become ice?

Can we label some temperatures on the

thermometer?

Scenarios: it is 7 degrees during the day

and -3 degrees by night. How much has
the temperature fallen?

WALT: Calculate rises and falls in temperature including

07.01.16
Warm Up: Mental Arithmetic and SATS style questions

20 quick fire mental

arithmetic questions

12 SATs style
questions in 10
minutes (be sure to
read through the
questions carefully
and always show
your working)

07.01.16
LI: Calculate intervals across zero

This number line has both positive and

negative numbers. We can have numbers
less than 0! For example, if the
temperature is less than 0 or a bank
account is overdrawn, or we are below
ground.

Lets count from -20 to 20

With a sum like 5 subtract 6, we normally

say we cant do it but with negative
numbers we can.

Can you write three sums with your

partner where the answer would result in
a negative number?

07.01.16
LI: Calculate intervals across zero

Activity: everyone start with -5

Choose a single digit number to add to -5

and the same single digit number to
subtract from -5

E.g. -5 + 7

Find the answers: 2 and -12

Find the difference: -10

Try another one

What do you notice?

What happens if you start with -4 instead?

and -5 - 7

07.01.16
Plenary: Calculate intervals across zero

Try three examples to prove that when

you start with -5, you always get the
answer -10. Why do you think this
would be?

Try three examples with -4

If youre ready, go onto -3 as well. Is

there a pattern that you recognise
here? Can you create a table to show
your findings?
