INTRODUCTION
Oceanarium is a large seawater aquarium in which marine animals are
kept for study and public entertainment.
It contains millions of litres of saline water, marine life, under water
tunnels, shipwrecks, coral reef environments, marine mammals including
sea lions, sea otters, penguins, touch pools where people can swim along
with dolphins and other marine organisms.
Oceanarium are developed to experience the marine environment and to
interact with marine life.
Such structures are sense of both business as well as research.
Oceanarium acts as a home to rare marine species.
It bridges the discovery, research, and conservation activities.
It offers the opportunity for visitor to experience and learn about the
marine environment.
It is like a natural theme park where one can see the marine creatures in
their natural habitat.
Oceanarium is a massive centre for marine education and entertainment
whereas aquarium is one or few standalone tanks in display with fresh or
marine water exhibits.

ABSTRACT

Oceanarium is a complex adventure providing visitors, of all ages with

entertainment, enjoyment and education.
Each facility has a number of entertainment and educational attractions,
which transform short visits in to memorable occasions.
This attraction mentally and visually removes the viewing public from
their everyday environment and transports them to the bottom of the
ocean.
Strategic and suitable displays, exhibits, touch pools; oceanarium,
dangerous creatures and marine artefacts entice the visitor through the
pre-determined route on the journey to the main oceanarium tank of
thousands of marine animals and plants with its submerged acrylic
tunnel.
The project shall incorporate a large oceanarium of many millions of
litres of processed water surrounding the walk - through acrylic tunnel.
Within the tank a complete marine ecosystem shall be established where
the rockwork and general layout of the tank reflects ocean conditions,
giving visitors a clear understanding of the marine environment.

NEED OF STUDY

India has been blessed with rich marine life because of its vast coastal
line which include Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal.
Ocean mysteries such as corals of Andaman and Lakshwadeep lagoons
cannot be ignored because of various reasons by the visitors on tour to
India.
Vertebrates like sea turtles, whales, alligators, bony fish and sharks or
invertebrates like jelly fish, sea stars, octopi, corals, lobsters, shrimps
and crabs can be explored in every part of oceans.
Oceanarium, in a country like India, is required to facilitate and
promote the marine life of the nation.
Oceanarium in Mamallapuram, would help in promoting tourism in the
city. The city has only few tourism attractions. Designing oceanarium in
the city, would directly boost the tourism sector of the nation.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES

AIM

The aim of the project is to attract more tourists to the town and is
expected to face lift the town into a major tourism destination in the
country.

OBJECTIVES

To create a commercial theme park where marine mammals are kept

within water tanks and displayed in public. Advance technologies
designs allows visitor to wander through tunnels and bridges to gain
differing perspective on the species.
To develop a research centre and conservation centre.
To create an awareness among the visitors about the protection and
preserving of marine mammals.
To develop entertainment centre to attract international and domestic
visitors.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

SCOPE
The design will be the first of its kind in the nation in developing a centre
that will cater to experience the marine life and interact with marine
environment with focus on emerging areas of studies like oceanography,
maritime history and maritime laws, and making the whole centre a
sustaining one in terms of revenue required to operate it in a successful
manner.
Building form, interiors and landscaped areas will be highlights of the
design.
Water required for the Oceanarium could be sourced from Ocean.
The land area is flat and empty and there is no resettlement issue involved
in the land as it has been well protected and maintained by Government.
LIMITATIONS
Structural details of the project will be a challenging task.
Temperature, humidity and ventilation details.

and geological conditions and processes in the landscape, and the
design ofinterventions that will produce the desired outcome.
The planned landscape beauty of a structure has helped create
enduring experiences for generations of people and their family.
Oceanarium, itself holds a part of nature in it. Landscape when blended
with oceanarium creates a striking plan form and built form.
Such a blend helps improve the aesthetics and functionality of the
design.
It further helps in preserving nature.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES

AIM

The aim of the project is to design usable outdoor spaces.

OBJECTIVES

To move society forward in seeing humans as part of nature and not

separate from it
To create balance between the built form and environment.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS
