INTRODUCTION
Filipinos now have the highest electricity bills in Asia, and the fifth most
expensive in the world. Such rates have not only hurt households, but also
made doing business very costly. The problem is largely an issue of supply
theres barely enough to meet the economys fast-growing demand.
This report aims to discuss why the Philippines has the 5 th highest cost of
electricity in the world and how we can change this by using alternative
energy source available in the country.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This report only discusses the roots and causes of high electricity rates in
the Philippines.
It does not discuss the government related policies and the details of the
arrangement made by the government and private electricity distributors.

DISCUSSION
Why electricity rates in the Philippines are high
Energy consumption in the Philippines
Powering the Philippines on renewable energy

WHY ELECTRICITY RATES IN THE PHILIPPINES ARE HIGH

Electricity price is high because electricity generation is partly dependent

on crude, petroleum which have gone high.
Other cheaper alternatives for generation like coal and natural gas have
also followed the path of oil price movements
The high cost of electricity is partly attributed to high costs related to
importing fossil fuels.
Another reason why the Philippines electricity price is high is costs root of
our backwardness.

The Philippines has started to prefer

But the majority of our energy sources are
still non renewable

RENEWABLE ENERGY
Based from the results of the first National Statistics Office (NSO) and Department
of Energy (DOE) Survey of Energy Consumption of Establishments (SECE)
conducted in 2010, a total of 53,889.59 kilo Tons of oil equivalent (kToe) were
consumed by 143,868 energy-consuming industries.
This was comprised of fossil fuels with 31,634.83 kToe consumed, renewable
energy with 19,118.70 kToe, and electricity with 3,136.67 kToe.
From the recorded total quantity of fossil fuels consumed by establishments, coal
was the most commonly used reaching 20,227.57 kToe. Almost all quantity of coal
or 99.8 percent was used to run machineries and equipment while the remaining
0.2 percent was used as raw material and for other non-energy use

Natural gas was also consumed by establishments as approximately
1,116.42 kToe were used to run transport equipment
For renewable energy, on the other hand, fuelwood registered at 691.30
kToe
Charcoal was also consumed with 60.09 kToe for the same purposes.
Other biomass fuels consisting of bagasse, biogas, sawdust, rice, coconut
and corn derivation made up 18,367.30 kToe.
.All renewable energies were used to run machineries and equipments.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This report introduced the high cost of living in the Philippines due to electricity
consumption rates.
We presented information regarding why the electricity rates in the Philippines are high,
the overall energy consumption of the country, and the alternative sources to gain
electricity, specifically renewable sources.
This issue is also due to the high prices of import of crude petroleum, which we use as a
source of energy. Furthermore, the report also discussed the root of high costs of
electricity in the country, which started during the regime of our late president
Ferdinand Marcos.
With all these gathered information, the group recommends that we use renewable
energy sources instead of the non-renewable ones.
This is because renewable energy sources are unlimited, it is cheaper, and the machines
used to produce electricity through renewable energy sources are low-maintenance.
Using renewable energy sources are also environmental friendly. It does not produce any
toxic waste and does not contribute to greenhouse gas effect.
