Liberal Bias in the

Media
Alyssa Brown, Amelia Kraus, and Victoria Savage

Journalists should
Examine their own cultural values and avoid imposing those values on others.
Support the open exchange of views, even views they find repugnant.
...Analysis and commentary should be labeled and not misrepresent fact or context.
Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived.
Remain free of associations and activities that may compromise integrity or damage
credibility.
...Shun...political involvement...if [it] compromise[s] journalistic integrity.
Disclose unavoidable conflicts.

28%
of journalists identify as Democrats -- only 7% identify as
Republicans
30% of American adults identify as Democrats, while 24%
identify as Republicans

How do people perceive the media?

A study done in 2013 found two in five
voters (41%) think the average
media reporter is more liberal than
they are,
Just 18% of people feel the average
reporters is more conservative
than they are.
Trust in the media has been declining
Democrats trust the media more
than Republicans
55% of Democrats trust the
media
Only 32% of Republicans trust
the media

Example #1:
Media news anchors are commonly known to treat interviewees of the
Republican Party and the Democratic Party quite differently
Republicans Aside from interviews by fox news, they tend to be interrupted often
& talked to in an accusatory tone by the moderators or news anchors interviewing
them.
Democrats Tend to be welcomed by news anchors/moderators, are very rarely
interrupted, and are talked to in an agreeing/friendly tone.

Take these two interviews:

Same anchor (George Stephanopoulos) , same news channel (ABC - Good Morning
America), talking to two campaign managers (one representing the Democratic
Party/Hillary, and the other, the Republican Party/Trump)

Example #2
The liberal media has shown polls that put Clinton more ahead of
Trump than she actually is
Here is a video of Trump arguing with Anderson Cooper about how
Cooper was showing polls where Trump was doing poorly rather
than show the polls where Trump was winning
Cooper brought up a Quinnipiac Poll, which showed that people, by a 2-1 vote,
viewed Trump badly

These polls can sway peoples opinions on candidates

A study done at Stanford showed that some voters switch sides in order to feel

Chief Concerns
Many of our anchors, editors, and producers are liberal and deny they
are biased
News companies make little or no efforts to balance the
conservatives/liberal viewpoints
Uneven coverage on democratic/republican issues and/or candidates
can sway viewers opinions on candidates and issues in an unfair
matter

Major Patterns
Journalists/the media tend to choose to
write/talk about reports from liberal
groups
Negative stories about Republican
leaders take headlines in
newspapers, whereas negative
stories about liberals are not covered
as much or ignored
Conservatives are labeled negatively
(example: Far Right) and liberals are
labeled positively (Civil Rights
