Activity:

Build a model that can

apply inertia and show
how the model is
applied.

EXPT: To find the relationship

between mass and
inertia

AIMS:

To investigate the
relationship
between the
inertia of an
object and the
masses of the
object.

RESPONDING VARIABLES
INFLUENCE BY/DEPENDS ON
MANIPULATED VARIABLES

The inertia depends

on the mass of the
object

HYPOTHESIS

The inertia of an object is

increasing, when the masses
of an object is also increasing.

or

The bigger the mass of an

object, the bigger the inertia of
an object.

PROCEDURE
1. Set up the apparatus as shown in figure
2. Place a plasticine with mass 30 g on the blade of the
saw. Pull the saw the sideways and then release it.
The saw will oscillate.
3. Start the stopwatch by counting zero when the
displacement of the rack reaches its maximum. Take
the time for 10 oscillations, t.
4. Repeat step 3 for the second time, t. The average
value of t and t is calculated as T
5. Repeat steps 2, 3 and 4 by placing the plasticine with
different masses, followed by 40 g, 50 g and 60 g.

6. Record your result in table as shown below.

7. Analyses your data by drawing a graph of
T, s against mass, m.
