To strive for the highest levels of performance in all scholarly
endeavors and to do so with the enthusiasm that stems from a true
love of learning and a devotion to academic excellence

fulfilling my obligations as a member of the academic community
To show thoughtfulness, understanding, and empathy toward my
peers, and to offer encouragement as they pursue their intellectual
goals
To be respectful of, and attentive toward those who teach and mentor,
while cherishing the ideal that academic excellence is best served
where scholarly debate flourishes

Why not copy

You lose the creative joy that you can get
by extensive research.
You rob others of their due.
You may spoil your reputation.
You will be punished.
It will become a habit.

cstl.semo.edu/.../2005Summer/e-excuses/June1.htm

Copying in examination is also

plagiarizing and unethical

Dont submit assignments for

the sake of submission.

What if the writer of the original

idea is not extant?
Alive or dead, it does not matter. If it is not
your own idea, you must cite your source!!

Poetry is a spontaneous overflow of

Powerful feelings, recollected in
Tranquility.
William Wordsworth
Preface to Lyrical Ballads

Translations?
Even when you translate someone, cite
the source.

Even with permission, reproduction

of the material is plagiarism
Without giving proper
credit, you can not
use the writing or
ideas of others.

The Plagiarism Handbook by Roger A. Harris, http://www.pyrczak.com/antiplagiarism/index.htm.

What about sites which give free

material?
Do you think that Free means
Dishonesty? You may not have to pay for
it, but if you quote from the site, give credit
to the source.
REMEMBER, IF YOU CAN FIND IT, SO
CAN YOUR PROFESSOR!

Do I have
to cite
everything?

No need to quote facts that are

widely known.
No need to document common
knowledge
Eg. The first world war was
fought from 1914-18.

How to cite borrowed material

If you use direct
quotations,
acknowledge your
source in
WORKS CITED
section of your
research

If you paraphrase the

original idea,
acknowledge your
source in
BIBLIOGRAPHY
section.

Borrowing material is never wrong

just cite the source properly

A Student Teacher Relation

Plagiarism damages the relation between
a teacher and students. Teachers want to
be mentors, not detectives, they want
to trust, not to doubt.

Institutional Reputation
By engaging in dishonesty a student does
not spoil his own reputation only, but he
spoils the image of the Institution also.

Collaborative work
Joint participation in a research project is
encouraged by many institutes. Sharing of
ideas in a group is not plagiarism, as long
as each member of the group is given the
credit.

Real life consequences:

Damaged the reputation of two prominent
historians, Stephen Ambrose and Doris Kearns
Goodwin,
Kearns left her television position and stepped down as
Pulitzer Prize judge for lifting 50 passages for her 1987
book The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys
Ambrose has been criticized for incorporating passages from
the works of other authors into many of his books including
World War II and The Wild Blue. After Ambrose admitted to
the errors, the New York Times found further unattributed
passages, and "Mr. Ambrose again acknowledged his errors
and promised to correct them in later editions.

"low point" in the newspaper's history.
