Examples & Exercises

Given the Strain field what is the

new length of the line segment AB,
which in the un-deformed
configuration lies along x-axis from
x = 2 ft to 4ft.

Strain in terms of displacement field

Using how many ways can the Deformation be
described?
Displacement Field Gives the movement of each
point in a body
Strain Field Deformational relative movement of
adjacent points originally along orthogonal axes
stretching and change in angle.

Strain-Displacement relationships
In principal, can we express strains in terms of
displacement field.
Is there an advantage in doing so ?
Most commonly used in Finite Element Method
based modeling of Elasticity
Also used to develop various theoretical
formulations

Strain-Displacement relationships
Consider the body in the
figure which has
undergone some
deformation that has
moved line segment from
its original location to the
new location AB

axis respectively it may be shown that,

Compatibility Considerations
Basic property of displacement field is that it
is single valued, and continuous function
By virtue of strain displacement relationship
we can make similar assertion about strain
field.
Compatibility equations are 2nd order partial
differential equations that ensure
compatibility of strains.
We will use geometric reason to ensure
compatibility.
